Why are so many people in religion ramming it down people's throat?

i can respect religion, but many aspects of it can be proven false. So why push the subject?

Report as

There will always be extremists in everything. There are bible thumpers and atheist thumpers too. Just like this question...it's looking for an argument.

Lack of respect from their side. That's it.
When they say this, the believe that's it, and nothing else. Period.
I'll confess, I sorta have that attitude, but I know how to control it.

Most people here as Christians do no such of a thing. The Bible tells us to speak the truth. And as a Christian that's what I do. It others who may disagree with you who come and make a fuss about it. I'll say this plain and simply. If you don't want to hear it don't respond or walk away it's that easy. It's your life and your choice. God gave you a free will.

Really? So when someone goes and says they support gay marriage, and people in the comments keep telling that they're wrong because "the bible says so", isn't ramming religion down someones throat? Christians do things like this all of the time. Let me give an example. I found out today that a friend of mine's almost boyfriend, who is a christian, went and called some girl extremely hurtful names, and when my friend asked him to apologize, he said "I will when you apologize for not believing in god!" Is that not shoving his religion down her throat. I'm not going to sit here and say that I, or other atheists, do not shove our belief that there is no deity down others throats, but saying that christians, on here or otherwise, do not, that's just not true.
Report as
JamesKaeberle
There is a different between one who says their Christian and those who are. For example. If you say your a Christian and don't live accounting to what God says then guess what? You not one. I'm sorry that guy called her some hateful names, but a true Christian doesn't do that. You can take that anyway you want but those are the facts.
Report as
But even you, James will admit there is a sect of believers calling themselves Christian who exceed the boundaries of reasonable evangelism. While certainly a minority, they get the attention. I would refer to the Westboro lunatics, not true Christians I grant you, but they are kind of what we are discussing here. I would never compare you to them.
Report as
You're using the No True Scotsman fallacy, James. Just because you don't want to acknowledge their mistakes doesn't mean they aren't Christians. You don't get to decide who is a Christian and who isn't.
Report as
JamesKaeberle
And you use the same statement over and over and over. Is that all you know how to say?

Matthew 7:15-20

You Will Know Them by Their Fruits

15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

God gives His people a discerned spirit so that we can know who is His and isn't. Sorry jjjjj but as usual you are wrong again.

As Christians we are required to tell others about God and about Christ. That some go overboard and make themselves obnoxious is tragic but certainly not true for all Christians.

I have never rammed any of my religion beliefs down anybody's throats, but have had it done to me countless times by morons who just think that because they believe in something of their own religion that everyone else must follow them with their beliefs WRONG everyone is tied to their own beliefs and opinions of what they think, do, and live. And their reasoning for doing this of what you are talking about is just there can be some people out there in the world who are just naive, ignorant, and stupid judgemental people that need to be ignored....

Because they think they're right and everyone else is wrong. And they can't stand what they don't understand. Like I know some people who say they don't believe in science. Well, I don't see how you can't because science isn't about belief. Science has been repeated numerous amounts of times so, regardless if you believe in it, it's still true. But they only say this because they don't understand it. And even when you correct them, they still don't understand it. Whether they believe in god or jesus, they think they're right. And they're not.

There are instructions in the Bible for believers to "spread the good news" to all the sinners and heathens to draw them into the fold. Understandable, but some lack the good judgement to know when they've crossed the line to imposing their views. Some don't care. They embarrass themselves and their fellows, I for one am all too happy to point that out when I encounter them.

In addressing this question, we must also address the implied accusation that Christians are an authoritarian group that seeks to impinge on the rights of others. Of course, there have been tyrants who were professed Christians, but true followers of Jesus Christ do not seek to infringe on anyone's basic human rights. The same God who granted volition to the believer also granted volition to the unbeliever. There is no doubt that when Christians share the joy that comes from faith in Christ, some see that as an attempt to impose Christianity on others. But the truth is that as Christians, we know that we have the antidote for human misery in this life and an eternity in hell in the next. To not share that cure with others, as we are commanded by Christ to do (Matthew 28:18-20), would be like knowing the cure for cancer and refusing to share it with the rest of the world. We can't force our beliefs on anyone; all we can do is offer them the cure and pray they will accept it. If some see that effort as "imposing" our beliefs on them, that is a matter of their perception, not a reflection of reality.

Probably most Christians aren't like that; it's only the obnoxious minority who keep shoving it at us.

Their motivation is a mixture of instruction, self-satisfaction and good intentions.

Evangelical churches encourage their members to go out "into the highways and the by-ways" and compel people to come in. Makes sense to me. It's good marketing. The bigger the flock, the higher the yield.

Does it occur to such proselytisers that they might be wrong? Not for a moment. After all, they have God's word (or, at least, the Christian version of it) so how can they be wrong?

Do they worry about becoming a pain in the butt to people who don't want to be saved? Not for a moment. In their innocence, God bless 'em, they think that they're saving us from, literally, a fate worse than death.

They mean well and most tone things down if there's sufficient opposition but then you get the kind of bigot who would feel at home in Westboro Baptist Church, an establishment as infamous in Oz as in the US. We only have a couple of those on Ask at present and one of them crops up in every religious discussion, mind closed, repeating the same tired old cliches. He'll probably turn up in this one.

Hi Doz, I feel many of your comments are neutral in regards to the topic at hand and feel sometimes it neutralizes the issue. Sounds like JJ needs to let God do His work, instead of JJ forcing it.

Dodgy, I think you and I had a talk about "fence-sitters," do you remember? I think you're right and there actually are some on here.. The questioner is one, apparently, if you read satanspawn's answer.

And Jim answered a Q using his OPINION, not scripture. This is a question of miracles..
Report as
It's a new day in Oz -- so cool that I had to wear a jacket when I took my morning walk. Now I'm back, fresh and ready for another day battling the Bangers.

@Win: I take your point. I hate throwing the baby out with the bathwater and I think the enormous majority of Christians on this site just do their own thing and, when they promote their beliefs, do it inoffensively. It's the idiots who think they have a corner on the truth and that all other Christians are wrong (not to mention we non-believers) that get up my nose. Of these, at present, JJ is the worst and the poor guy can't even see it. So, yeah, I guess some of my posts do tend to neutralise things, but others certainly inflame them.

@HaiMai: Alas my memory isn't what it was but I vaguely recall the fence-sitting comments. And, yes, JB may well be one. Certainly he's opened up a littler. But JJ giving an opinion? I don't believe it. Somebody must have hacked his account.

I like Satanspawn's answers though I've often wondered whether his name is meant to imply Satan's pawn or Satan spawn? 8<{

Doz, I had wondered where the Oz thing came into play - now I know!!! I do enjoy interacting with all users, regardless of what they believe or not believe, and everything in between. I am someone who does believe in God, and feel my actions and words should be reflective of that belief. I do not or should I expect others to have the same beliefs - it's not the place of a "christian" to condemn another - it's to love.

This site is about questions and answers, and ALL should respect what someone else may say. Can each of us answer objectively? Yes - it's a choice. Many chose to be disrespectful repeatedly toward religious questions, especially if it pertains to Christianity. From many things I've read by those who state they are a christian, they have been filled with unkindness and anger, reacting in-kind to an answer, things "christians" should refrain from. Is it right - no, and they (christians) should apologize. Each of us should be able to disagree respectfully - regardless of the topic.

I once met a women who was a christian who told me that she would be willing to kill me to convert my soul to christianity. I met this woman on a city bus we regularly rode. Even if I avoided her and minded my own business, she would aggressively try to move next to where I was sitting to harass me and some other passengers on the bus about her faith saying: "try it or jesus will hate you and feel sorry for you.

I even had neighbors who told me that if I don't believe in "jesus christ the way that they've been taught, that I will be a slut and damned to hell".

These are just a couple of times that I've experienced or witnessed people forcing their beliefs down others without permission, including christians.
