Any tips for breaking in a horse?

Unfortunately my mum horse has gotten to old to be ridden anymore, I've always wanted to break in a horse, so my mum brought an unbroken horse who came yesterday(shes a beautiful dapple grey irish sports horse) and asked me to break it in, I know the basics and my auntie is a very experience horse handler, so she going to come round every fortnight to see how I'm getting on. Does anyone have any useful tips that I should know?

I hate the term "break". Just remember to use the horses instinct and intelligence. It is about a partnership and a conversation. You do not ever need to be harsh to gain a horses respect. Always remain calm and relaxed in all you do. Be consistent and clear in what you ask. Good luck to your Irish Sport Horse.

How old is the horse? What kind of handling has it had?

She's 2 1/2 years old and she has had relitivly good handling.

Does she lead, longe, trailer, ground drive, carry a saddle and bridle willingly? Alway a good age to start bomb proofing if you have a good calm, sensible horse to help you, try ponying her on trails and such.

No she didn't have any training from her previous owners, and she only arrived a couple of days ago, so were going to wait a while to get her settled in before we start with anything, but we'll defiantly do that when she's ready. thank you for the advice!

I would train just about in order I listed, except trailer breaking can fit in anywhere. Add tying to that list too!

Never wear red around any horse!! Go out there every day and spend some time with it and every once in a while bring it a treat!:)
