A little bit of both

When we read the Book of Revelation and understand the contents surrounding some of the scriptures - we will see that some of it is literal and some symbolic. We also need to note the Revelation - is a book of "Revealing" at God's appointed time. - Revelation 1:3

Exactly. Symbolism had to be used or the bible never would have made it to this time period.

We aren't sure, as @runrunrun says it's a little bit of both when we read and study it. The chapter still holds some challenge and mystery to us.

Sorry your wrong. It's the Word Of God written by men inspired by God though the Holy Spirit.

LOL...How on earth do you know I am wrong?? How can you POSSIBLY know who is right and who is wrong. You believe what YOUR religion tells you. What happens if YOUR religion turns out to be the wrong one?? Why do you think there are so many different religions?? If all are wrong but one.... Who is to say YOU made the right decision over everyone else. Pretty arrogant of you.

I think the asker here was asking if there's symbolism or literal. Like do you REALLY think a beast will rise up from the sea with 10 heads and 7 horns etc? Or is it symbolizing something else?
Report as
but they said to take that literally. My point was to try to get them to think about it. They dont wish to argue.... they just want to be told they are right.... Like most religious zealots.

I was asking James. Sorry. There's a ton of symbolism. There had to be so the bible would make it to this point.
Report as
sorry neanderthal, james is right. a seven headed monster is literally going to come up from out of the ocean. the bible is correct and we know the bible is correct because the bible says the bible is correct.

That question itself has been discussed and debated since the early days of philosophy. I would argue that modern interpretation by non fundamentalist individuals leans heavily towards its origins being a non literal and therefore work of metaphor.

Like that part where the sun revolves around the Earth?
Report as
Yep. The sun does revolve around the earth.
Report as
No it doesn't. We revolve around the sun. Did you miss that part in fourth grade science?
Report as
Scientist are wrong. The bible says that the sun revolves around us. So who do you believe: some guy or God?
Report as
You have to be trolling. No one can be this stupid.
Report as
It's not trolling It's my believes.
Report as
No one is dim enough to believe the sun revolves around the earth.
Report as
I believe because the bible says so.

The writers of Revelations thought the "end times" were coming within their own lifetimes- much of Revelations was written as metaphor for the Roman Empire. The anti-Christ was meant to be the Roman Emperor Nero.

Wow. You really don't get much out of the bible without Gods' guidance, do you?
Report as
See, I actually learned the history of my own religion back when I was still a Christian. The problems in it were just one more reason I'm not Christians anymore.

I think a little of both. I believe John had a vision of the end times, and it's difficult to describe spiritual sights in human terms.

Mostly symbolic. The U.N. represents the wild beast and false religion is represented by the harlot. The Bible says the the wild beast will turn on the harlot.
