What are those things that exploded in the War of 1812?

In social studies, we learned about the backstory of the star-spangled banner song. We watched a video from the history channel about it and it showed some battlefield shots. It said that _________s explode in air, with big sized pieces that fall down on the other side. What are these? Cannons? Bombs?

Shells

(rockets were to light an area ... like flares, today)

The fuse of a shell can be set so it either explodes over the target, or when it hits the ground ... or even after it sits a while on the ground, so the enemy thinks it's a dud.

" ... the rockets' red glare ... bombs bursting in air ... "
