Who here thinks rats make great pets?

I am an animal lover, and more specifically a rat lover. I have several of these beautiful babies, and I was just wondering.

Me Too ... Baaawwwwoooollllll Bark like a dog!" a normal size dawg. German Shepard, Golden, Black lab, Dobbie, etc. I 'm glad you included the Hawk. I really like birds of prey, but where I live, I know all about "small dog warning." And it doesn't directly have to do w/the wind and them getting blown away,... persay!!... Big Smiles. Big Time. Big Dog! Happy! Happy!

Rats are actually pretty smart and if you're a good "master" your rats won't just be sitting in a cage. My granddaughter takes hers out all the time. They are really adventurous.

Lots of people have that fear. I understood it until I got a rat as a pet, and while I understand that people are afraid of them, once I got to know one I learned they make wonderful pets. Plus they are soooo cute!

I know some people like them, but having to deal with them as pests I will never think of them as a pet.

I do! I had a pet rat named Sniffy when I was a kid, my son had one named Harley and now my granddaughter has a pair named Daphne and Velma. Her first pair, Sunny and Cher, lived for almost five years. They are so much fun and really social!

I knew someone who had one as a pet and it made a good pet. Named him Ben, truly. (However, you may be too young to understand that reference.)

I saw the movie Willard, which is a remake of the movie Ben. I also have a rat named after that film, and he is white. Actually his name is Benzawie, but the first part of his name is inspired by that film.

How about a Kangaroo Rat?? I looked them up and my husband had one for a brief time when he was a kid. They are cool! Have a hopping rat of a good night! :) :)

I have rats already, and actually not all are white with red eyes. I have 2 that are like that, but I also have 4 grey, 1 blonde, several white with spots, 2 brown, and 3 hairless.
Report as
A Kangaroo Rat sounds fun though. I love most animals.
Report as
As do I SamandDeanfan. I am fond of all animals. Thanks for letting me know there are more than the eerie white ones. I'm just weird when it comes to albino things. It doesn't matter what sort of animal it is. I grew up w/ white standard poodles, but they had black noses What's up with the hairless ones? Where are they originally from? What is there purpose? I ask only because I will give all rats something most people don't think about. They Are Smart! They do communicate w/one another & they pay attention. Also, squirells are "rats" with a fluffy tail! The are cute. A pain, but still cute. Good for you for liking all kinds. Check out the Kangaroo Rat thing. I believe I googled it, but you can probably do it through Ask as well. Good Luck! :)
Report as
Oh, and thanks for the "helpful" star! Happy! Happy!
Report as
It is my understanding that naturally hairless rats are that way because of a problem with the gene that produces hair. They can occur in any type of rat. Hairless rats can give birth to baby's who have hair, and vice versa. Hairless rats can also be made hairless in a lab from what I understand, but they are more prone to health problems. You are right, they are VERY smart.
Report as
no problem about the star
Report as
I feel for the hairless ones. No body probably likes them at all. I wonder if all the other rats make fun of them. Seriously. I DO think about things like this. I have a quick question for ya, if you've got a moment. I've had a really big problem w/ squirels eating our flowers. We've tried many things. Abouts the rats. We have the same problem and they live under our house. (Our house is on stilts) We can hear them in the walls and now they are under there. Any humane suggestion on how to have them relocate?
Report as
There are humane traps that you can buy to catch problem animals. Also you can try calling someone who does pest removal and ask what their practices are. Should you choose to remove them your self, I strongly advise that you wear thick clothing when handling the traps just in case you get bit. These animals can carry rabies. As far as where to get the traps, idk. You should bate it with something like peanut butter.

I had a pet rat once, but I don't really remember him, cause I was really little, but his name was Blacky, but he wasn't black though. He was a very confused rat.

I suppose if you can look at a rodent as a pet, their as good as a hamster or a Ginny pig. Their easier to get to! because in America Ginny pigs don't infest the sewer's and people's homes. You need to go to a pet store and buy one.

My Chinese Zodiac is a rat, so maybe that's why I have a special place in my heart for them. I remember my first pet rat was named Kenzie. I actually got her from school. A student had pet rats who had babies and the principal let her keep them there until they found a home. I was probably in 9th grade. I snuck Kenzie home in my backpack. I remember pretending to cough every time Kenzie made a squeak. My mom wasn't happy when she found out because she's afraid of most animals and their tails creep her out. I was able to keep Kenzie and even get another rat. When they passed I didn't get anymore until I moved out of the house with my now husband. We got them almost 3 years ago. Clover and Violet. Clover has already died from old age a few days ago. They are good pets and get along with our cats. We also have guinea pigs. It's just sad rats don't live very long.

They're smart, sweet-natured, and easy to care for. Also (believe it or not) very cleanly animals--you haven't lived until you've seen a rat cleaning itself! What's not to like?

So many people have misconceptions about rats. My aunt was convinced that all rats have rabies. She did not understand that they have to contract it from another animal. lol. Also movies help to spread the misconceptions. Saw a film once that tried to pass a lab rat off as a hamster. lolol
