What's the difference between first person games and third?

Does it give you a better feel of your surrounding or what?

With first person you see through the eyes of your character. For instance, in most shooter games you just see the gun you are holding and your hands. In third person, you see your character on screen. An example of a 3rd person shooter would be Gears of War, where you see Marcus on the screen. But most 3rd person games aren't shooters.
One advantage of using 3rd person in shooter games is the duck and cover system that make GOW so much fun for example.
