I think BoyPinoy has given a fine answer and I won't try to improve on it but did you know that bananas used to be straight?
The marketing people thought they'd sell better if they had a bend in the middle, like a boomerang, so farmers used to hire people to bend them. Since most Australian bananas were grown in Queensland most of the banana benders lived there and that's the reason we call Queenslanders "banana benders".
One grower got greedy though and started doing his own bending by placing whole hands of bananas over a vat of boiling water. The heat from the steam bent them. That's how automation first came to the banana bending industry.
But the guy had arthritis and the bananas caught it and they started bending all by themselves. And that's the reason you don't see too many straight bananas today.
I have been looking for SOMETHING to make my banana slicing duties easier! I REALLY need this product. Who knew that there was a cure to the difficulty in slicing ripe bananas??? Boy am I glad I found this!!! My life will be so much easier!!!
