Short-haired tabby cats are beautiful. One thing I can tell you for sure about cats is there's nothing you can say that applies to all cats. Breeds have general qualities, like Siamese cats tend to do a lot of "talking", Maine Coon cats are mellow and huge, Persians are aloof, and you can't even say that they all have fur because they don't. Shorthairs I've had have spanned the spectrum from on my lap and wanting to be petted all the time, to not wanting to even come in the house or be touched, just stand outside the window looking in and meowing. You'll get what you get and my advice to you is to have a happy cat, let him or her be who s/he is, accept them and what they want to give. Adopt one from a shelter, they kill millions of cats every year because there are so many that are unwanted. Good luck!

Most short haired cats do not require a lot of grooming, but they may need brushing a couple times a week. Some shorthairs like the British Shorthair have an undercoat that can mat if not brushed out regularly, but I don't think the DSH does. Are you looking at Silver Tabby? I love them, beautiful cats. If you are looking for a full breed cat I highly recommend Scottish Fold for personality though, they are loving playful cats that like to be close to their people.

There are American Shorthairs, Oriental Shorthairs, etc. but a domestic shorthaired tabby is not a specific breed - it's like a mixed breed dog. It's the name given to a non- purebred shorthaired cat. Every cat is going to be unique in it's characteristics so no one can tell you what your cat's personality will be. It's more important that you learn about general proper care like nutrition, vaccinations, neutering, etc and be sure you have the finances set aside. If you're starting with a kitten it's not cheap to get them all their proper initial health care. There are great websites and books to help educate you about general feline behavior.

There are 5 types of Tabby patterns. Classic, Mackerel, spotted, Ticked, and Agouti. Tabbies come in many colors and breeds. You are probably looking for a household pet which is a domestic long or short hair. Because of the different mixture of parents and their backgrounds, it is difficult to say what the personality will be. You will have to determine that when you pick out your kitty. Please be prepared to give your kitty the best you can financially and socially. Cats live to play, so play with it every day but do not let it use you as a toy! The pet shop has lots of interactive toys that will keep you from being a target. Good luck!
