My niece got a cage for either a hamster, dwarf hamster, gerbil, or a rat, which is best for her?

She's thirteen years old and has previously owned a mouse so she has had experience with those. The cage has wire walls and a plastic base.

Mice bite like, hamsters, gerbils, and rats. Never had a hedgehog, give that a try.
My mouse name was "Socrates". Let him roam the room, while asleep (like a lazy bear) he would bite to say "hello". I guess.

Gerbils are the cutest things! I would reccomend a Gerbil :) or maybe a guniea pig or hedgehog.

I didn't know that hedgehogs were being sold in pet stores now. I hope they're adaptable to cages. I'd try to find out more before buying one . . . hamsters are adorable, I had one as a kid, and I loved it.
