Crate training isn't cruel. After the pup is past his teething phase, you'll be able to keep him home alone just fine. My sheltie Moose ALWAYS used his crate to sleep. I don't know why he did this, but I always found him in his crate, and by his own choice. It must have been security for him, he always sought it out during storms. He lived to the very old age of 21, he was truly an amazing animal. ;)
I know you love this dog, but I think you should reconsider having a puppy if you are going to leave it in a crate like this. You're going to take him from his mother to put him in a crate by himself all day? Sure, he'll be fine. But it's not fair for him.
Too long especially if she sleeps in a kennel at night. You might could get away with it if you walked her for 45 minutes before work. This means getting up earlier. Can you possibly have someone take her out a11am? oops you said not crated. might want to reconsider that option, dogs are den dwellers. my pit loves her kennel, she sleeps in it all the time. I only latch the door at night.
