A conditioned, emotional response. Evolution embedded tribal and territorial impulses in our simian brains. It's easy for anyone intuitive enough about these and with some basic Pavlovian techniques to condition this behavior in anyone (the folks in charge have been doing it since Kindergarten, little league games, etc., remember? And it's been _reinforced_ ever since...), especially to elicit it in crowds which exhibit herd (tribal) behavior. How many people at home alone stand up for it? An added subliminal message: we're all really from the same "tribe" despite this heated, angry match and we will honor the outcome and not bear grudges whether it favors us or not. It's conditioned "civility." After all, we're all born passionate, self-centered, illiterate barbarians who must somehow acquire cultural memes (including language) for our leaders to be able to keep us in check and predictable... Please read up on your Edward Bernays.
To show pride and gratitude to those who gave up so much so that we could live our lives freely in the way we choose. Anyone remember Pat Tillman? Perfect example. Sing it for him and the family he left behind. And all those like him.
