At what age is too old to breed a Shih Tzu?

My dog's Vet said she was 3-5 years old. He said she's probably closer to three. Everyone tells me that she is too old to have puppies. Is that true?

All purebreeds have thier own unique problems that should be checked for. I'm not familiar with all the Shitzu's but your vet should be. I would not breed any female before 18 months of age after 2 would be my preference. Temperment for a small dog is often overlooked. Most of the Shitzu crosses I have seen eat their own poop. It would be something I would not want breed into the next generation.

Well, the only problem my Shih Tzu has that we know of, is that she is highly allergic to fleas!

No but PLEASE fix your dog it will increase its life span to up to 3 years also you won't have to deal with the heartbreak of giving up pups because the male dog can never see the pups and when they are 10 weeks you must sell them anyway because it will stress the mother out to have them there that long

Please listen to me I went to one of the best vet schools in the country CSU, and I did all 4 years and I have my own practice. I know what I am saying so please please don't breed your dog fix him and love him for those extra 3 years

It's a she.. And I love her very much!! But, how does getting her fixed add years to her life?

So dogs with the way they are "put together" and they way we have domesticated them when they have their cycle or new sperm growth creates pressure on their body that can cause many health issues that reduced their original life span by a few years. Also since you don't know this I'm guessing you don't have the training which ca be very dangerous for a mother dog ad the pups no to mention yourself

Well, I will be asking our Vet about all this..

Ok well I'm pretty sure he will agree. All I want is for animals to live long healthy lives. There are so many other unwanted puppies in the world why create more just for your happiness?
Report as
I don't want her to have puppies for my own happiness or for money.. I don't want to sell them or get rid of them.. And I don't want to breed her with just any dog.. I want her to find the right guy first and actually like him..

Dog dot think that way, and you CANNOT keep the pups please please listen there are thousands f cases each year were the mother will attack the owner, the pups, or hurt herself because she becomes depressed and stressed because in the wild the pups go off on their own around 10-13 weeks of age. If you do this you are going to go through some serious heartbreak either way. I'm begging please don't all I want is for everything to end up well

Omg lady.. She's a Shih Tzu, not a coyote! She's lives in a house with me, not out in the wild! Sorry if I seem rude, but this just seems a little crazy..

It's not i am a trained professional you have no clue of what you are talking about and just be because it's a house dog does not mean its lost its instinct!
Report as
Look here, dogs are mammals. And female mammals become natural mothers once they've had their babies. That is their instinct!

Yes only up to a point just like most human mothers and also like humans a lot of them were not meant to have children all I am saying is that if you truly live your dog you will give it the extra life she deserves and that's it goodbye

Just one last thing having puppies costs a lot up to 2000 dollars depending on how many and your training levels so if you do not have that kind of money there is no way you can raise pups
