Ravens gate by anthony horowitz. It's the first of a series of five books. Soooooo gooood! The last just came out recently. Does not really have a happy ending. Depends on how you look at it

Its an amazing book. Its not very well-written but I loved it! It has a great story line and for somebody who doesn't read a lot of books, me liking this was kind of a big deal haha.

The Michael Bennet series by Patterson is wonderful, The Chronicles of Nick series by Sherrilyn Kenyon is my favorite series right now, The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod, and the Legacy of Tril, both of which are by Heather Brewer are also excellent reads, and most all of them fall into your not necessarily happy ending criteria.

I'm a huge Stephen King fan also. And I love Anne Rice too. Her series on The Mayfair Witches is addictive, but the first book in the series, "The Witching Hour", can also stand on its own. I don't know if you would be into it but if you enjoy her writing, she also has a set of Erotica. It's written under the pseudonym A.N. Roquelaure and is loosely based on "Sleeping Beauty": The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty, Beauty's Punishment, Beauty's Release
