Does a ouija board really work?

Report as

No it doesn't. It's just cardboard and plastic, sold at Toys R Us for goodness' sakes.

The Ouija board was invented as a parlor game in the 1890s. It wasn't until WWI that anyone claimed it could summon "spirits", and that was the infamous "medium" and sham artist Pearl Curran. It's absolute nonsense to think that a printed piece of cardboard with a plastic pointer can summon anything.

The "answers" are a result of the ideomotor effect- in other words, you subconsciously move the planchette yourself. This has been proven in multiple experiments. In one of them, researchers blindfolded participants and flipped the board upside down without them knowing- the planchette still "moved" to where the participants THOUGHT the "yes" and "no" were.

Yes, that whole reliance on facts and not myths thing is SO weird.

Sorry, but I find grown adults who think cardboard parlor games summon evil spirits "weird"- and gullible.
Report as
Haha you just don't know huh? My friend played with that thing and regrets it soooo bad. He tried to throw it away and when he woke up the next day it was right there on his dresser. I saw it with my own eyes. He went to to go throw it away a second time and it sported on his dresser again. How do u explain that.

Yeah, sure it did. Magic cardboard. Pull the other one- it's got bells on.

Honestly, how adults fall for this is beyond me.
Report as
Hahaha you just don't know. Why would I lie like that??
Hey how old are u? Why are you the way you are?
Report as
People are gullible and easily fooled. When you have actual verifiable evidence of your claims we'll talk.

And what "way" is that? Using facts and evidence before I accept outrageous claims? Actually knowing the history and facts of these issues? Not a gullible child?
Report as
I agree with Annabella. Her friend wouldn't make those claims up if it wasn't true. Besides she says she saw it with her own eyes. Some people believe and some don't. Everyone of us is entitled to our own opinions. I just can't believe skeptikitten would believe a tv program over someone that's gone through it. I've had my own experience with this subject but I won't say another word about it. I guess we're all gullible
Report as
Yes of course- everything everyone claims must be true. I guess this mans you believe in Bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster, fairies, and every god mankind has ever believed in?

And what are you talking about, TV program? I don't even get TV, nor did I say anything about TV.
Report as
His pastor told him that everything evil comes from TV. What you say is evil to him, therefore you must have gotten it from TV.
Report as
Something tells me you don't even believe in god. There's good spirits and bad spirits. People believe because they've seen. Go ahead and believe in you're evolution and I'll believe in spirits and god
Report as
No- I do not believe in things for which there is no evidence like spirits or gods. I accept evolution because it is supported by mountains of evidence and can be directly, verifiably, objectively observed.

Rational people accept things for which here is verifiable evidence, not extraordinary claims with no support. It's telling that you believe rationality is somehow a detriment.

I think that it depends on people's beliefs. I'd like to believe that there are souls around us and I hope to use ouija board to do something especially!!!

How could it possibly depend on the level of credulousness of the user? It either is or is not real. If a person and their friends want to fool themselves into a group hallucination, that still doesn't make it real.

Dawn, it is a piece if wood or these days pressed fiber board. If we all wanted to sit around and contact the dead we wouldn't have to by a $30 cardboard box with these pieces of junk in it to get the job done. Think it through. Have you played this before? As a kid? As an adult? I have and so have about a million other folks. Most of us are none the worse for it. We had our fun and moved on.
Report as
I wouldn't say "played". Yes. I know what they are made of. And I know that lots of people play with them. But they can have a huge effect on some people. If you believe it will work as a go between then you are opening yourself up to possibilities better left alone. I have seen / heard things that I wouldn't believe if I was not standing there.
Report as
It's the ideomotor effect and over active imaginations- nothing more.

@ the kitty - hmmm. I will think about your comment and i read your answer below too. I think I might have to stand my ground on this one. Will you reread my comment and then tell me why it is wrong? The power of ones own mind is incredible. One classic example is the power of a hard core alcoholic or addict to truly believe they don't have an addiction issue. Despite their whole world imploding around them. I can think of others as well.
Report as
There has been experiments conducted on Ouija participation- it's all 100% subconscious muscle reaction.
There is no evidence spirits, ghosts, demons, etc. even exist.

Annabell, novel doesn't believe in much of anything unless he experiences it himself. People who don't believe tend to make fun of people who do because of fear, ignorance and ego. It's easy to dismiss what others experience as insane, stupid or a lie because they don't get it. And prob never will.

Yes, although it is just a game, its main purpose is to contact the spirit world ,and that world is very real. Demons will use our curiosity to lure us into something that God forbids. " It's just cardboard and plastic", but Satan uses it to deceive us.

Where are the demons, straw? Ever wonder why you've never seen one, and in fact no one you know and trust has ever seen one?

Novel. "Therefore, submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will run away from you." James 4:7
I have never seen a tornado too, and I hope never to encounter one.
I would also hope anyone that I know and trust would never have seen one too.
"You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil--the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God" Ephesians 2:2 .

Except you can prove verifiably tornadoes exist. They've been recorded and measured.
Bad analogy.

straw: Next you'll be talking about how curious and curiouser it is that no one can "see" an emotion like love.
Report as
Novel, there are many things, such as emotions, that you can't see. You can see the effects. Same with the demons, you may not see them. but you can see the effects they have on people.
Report as
No, primitive people invented demons to explain what they didn't understand, like mental disorders.

If all you can ever see is the alleged effects, you admit you have no way of knowing WHAT causes them- you just BELIEVE it's demons.
Report as
And you called it Novel- it's like there's a master list somewhere of "crappy arguments for god" and people on here just keep revisiting the top ten.

Ouija Boards are like many other tools (crystal ball, cards, tea leaves) that people use to help them communicate with spirits. Most people believe they are evil based on religious stuff they have heard, but there is no evidence to support that theory. You can, communicate with spirits of varied backgrounds using the board; good, mediocre and bad. It might be good for someone who has not developed their ability to communicate with spirits, as a learning and experience tool, but in the long run is not a very good communication tool.€

To mislead people, the demons use spiritism. The practice of spiritism is involvement with the demons, both in a direct way and through a human medium. The Bible condemns spiritism and warns us to keep free from everything connected with it. Galatians 5:19-21. Spiritism does for demons what bait does for fisherman.
A fisherman uses a variety of baits to catch various kinds of fish. Similarly
wicked spirits use different forms of spiritism to bring all sorts of people
under their influence. One type of bait is used by the demons is divination.
What is Divination? It is an attempt to
find out about the future or about something unknown. Some forms of
divination are astrology, the use of tarot cards, crystal gazing, palmistry
and the search for mysterious omens,
or signs, in dreams, also ouija boards.
Although many people think that practicing divination is harmless. The bible shows that fortune tellers and wicked spirits work together. For instance, Acts 16:16mentions a demon . "One day as we were going down to the place of prayer beside the river, we met a demon - possessed slave girl who was a fortune - teller, and earned much money for her masters." (Living Bible). The demon enabled the girl to practice the "art of predication". So please listen to some that say stay away from these things.
