I can hear the conspiracy theorists revving their engines from here. LOL

We have plenty to go around! There's no need to mint more! We hardly use the ones we have.
Well if it takes more money to make a penny than the penny is worth then yes I think we should
Oh I don't know. It would be a government action resigning to bad times and that's kinda depressing. Then again they don't give as much as we put into them.
The penny has definitely outlived its usefulness. It also costs us more to make them than they are worth
Seem to vaguely remember that was under consideration but due to % on sales Taxes did not go through? Bit ridiculous; be easy enough to just round out prices & make that a non-isue, as the EU did. Oh, oh...feel another "side-search" coming up! Ha, ha.
So why can't we do the same? But then again.. Canada a bit more sensible than we are....
Ja, have thought many times, if weren't for the COLD(brrrr) would move there! Either Nova Scotia or British Columbia, both beautiful and nice people! Wouldn't have much trouble fitting in, come from more laid back country and many confused by my accent think it's Canadian anyway :-).
I would definitely have to take my HotTub !
cupcakes to the penny
It's not really a reflection of "bad times", just a couple hundred years of creeping inflation which is perfectly normal in a growing economy. I say, "do it."
No! Because if something costs $4.98 America ain't going to lower it to $4.95, they will round UP! That's more expensive then, and we will all be screwed
Does that mean I'll have to pay "a nickle for your thoughts" from now on? Talk about hyper-inflation.
In Oz we abandoned our 1C and 2C coins years ago. 5c is now the smallest and it's only a matter of time before that one goes.
We deropped our $1 and $2 notes too. They are coins now.
But... I like finding face-up pennies on the ground.... I stick them in my right shoe and it brings me luck. Or at least, I have happier days after I slip the penny into my shoe.
If we get rid of the penny, then phrases like "a penny saved is a penny earned" will make no sense. People make wishes throwing pennies into fountains. If they throw nickels or larger coins people will be more inclined to steal them. Then they'll slip and fall in the fountain and you're looking at a $100 Million law suit. People have named their daughters 'Penny'- and again when pennies disappear their names will have no meaning. I love penne pasta - but nickel pasta?...hmm
P.S For all of you that want to kill the penny, if you think they are worthless, i will be more than happy to take them off your hands. You want to give away free money i will take it.
I don't know. But Canada should not get rid of the oney and twoies (sp?) coins.. I loved them. Although, by my estimates, I lost about ten dollars a week when I lived in Canada. :)
A dollar should be divided into tenths for now. Maybe into quarters later on
