How to get over the fear of being hit when boxing/sparring?

I do Krav Maga. Part of my training is boxing skills.
When practice sparring, I become overwhelmed and nervous, there for becoming ineffective with my fighting technique or defense, so I end up getting hurt almost every time.
I am one out of very few women in this training program, so I am usually partnered up with a guy who is much bigger and stronger than me.
I have to get over this... the rest of the class is improving in this area and I am not. I am afraid one day I'm going to be too slow and get knocked unconscious.

In practice, you have more time to think because it's not real.

But if there is ever the case that you need to truly defend yourself (let's hope that never happens) your instincts should take over and you won't have time to be scared.

Besides, you won't be able to control the size and strength of another person---all you'll be able to control is yourself and your reactions.

Just keep practicing sparring. If you knew you were afraid of being hit, why did you take the class? If you want to stick with it, then really commit---or else quit.

I have been doing Krav Maga for almost a year now. I have committed myself to it. I just can't relax during the sparring part of training. I am only afraid of being punched because I have already taken so many punches.
Report as
If relaxation is the problem, try to do something relaxing before your practice. I listen to music before a test sometimes (because tests are difficult for me and I worry too much about them).

Just find out what you need and fill that need. Best of luck.

Well....ya know what they say....to conquer a fear you must face it.....let a punch land in your face and see what happens.....it might not be as bad as you think it'll be.....I mean, ya'll are wearing pads and stuff right??

Yeahhhh ... that philosophy only works part of the time, let me tell ya.
It's really NOT a good idea to face your fears of being mauled by a bear.
Trust me on this one.

Hey NAFTA!!! where've you been???

Yes we wear pads. I have taken many punches to the face, I know what it feels like believe me.
Report as
OH!! So you're literally just scared of being knocked-out-cold then?
Report as
I don't think this gal could really take a full force hit from a MMA fighter, (neither can I for that matter), so in that sense I think her fear could be justified. I would assume though that "Krav Maga" would have some sort of defensive answer for such a conundrum? Like "duck"?

No, I fully understand the concerns....I prefer my brain to not be bouncing off the inside of my skull either....8)

Yes NAFTA, I am basically afraid of being knocked out cold. lol

Yes Jebidiahcrackercorn, ducking is something I should be doing. I just forget to do it in time more often than not. lol

I guess I just need more training in that area.

On a serious note, I don't know what to tell you. (I wish I could help). On a more upbeat note, assuming that is your picture, try batting those pretty eyes at your partner and that should help. On a serious note again, if you keep getting hit on in the class and it starts to p!$$ you off then, try to use that anger to help overcome your fear. (I guess that is why some of us are so angry--Fearful. ) Good luck.

Go up to a strong man and tell him to punch you in the face. If you live you won't be scared any more.

You sound like a nice person. Don't be a nice person when you want to punch someone. Be mean and nasty, learn to love adrenaline, and if all else fails, aim for his genetic legacy.

Yeah, I guess. lol We aren't allowed to aim for the genetic legacy during training though. LOL

Well, I don't know much about this but aren't male boxers usually paired with someone of the same weight class? I think you are brave enough for just facing someone bigger and stronger than you in this way. Your fear in this case is reasonable and it's trying to tell you that you are not safe. I think you should box other females or take a different discipline, sorry.

What you said is true.
But boxing is only one of the fight skills we learn in Krav Maga.
I am doing well with everything else just not that part.
I am one of only a few women at my skill level, so I have to train with guys.
Report as
Not that I'm an expert in ANY martial arts, but I disagree somewhat. She should be paired up sometimes with someone bigger, just to learn something of defensive skills. (I did take Karate, but I didn't really go anywhere with it, but the Sensei who taught the class. when teaching "street fighting" DID pair the students up by mismatching them.) The only problem is if she is CONSTANTLY mismatched I doubt she will get the confidence she needs. However with MY level of skills, I am in NO WAY fooled by anyones "lack of confidence". Still that does not mean I'm ready to face Tito Oriz, Randy Couture or Chuck Lidell anytime soon. I probably would piss on myself if I had to deal with them. Hell, I can think of one who knows "psychic" combat who did a number on me, without laying a finger on me, and he STILL has me scared!

I'm not a boxer or anything... But to get over your fear you have to face it which simply means practice getting hit. Brace yourself move around and take a few punches if you can't dodge them. Your tough!!! Just have to get use to getting hit, I'm sure every boxer have had to get use to that!!

I really don't know how to help with the getting hit part, since I wouldn't want to get hit in the face either. My solution is to try another sport that doesn't involve getting hit. I think it takes a "special" kind of person to want that kind of punishment.

When I fight(CQC), I try to disassociate myself from pain. Imagine your head(that's where I get nervous about getting hit) is solid and any blow would just bounce off to the side. Allowing an area to absorb a hit isn't the greatest feeling. Just remember that pain is in the mind, so you have to trick your mind(people trick their own minds all the time without realizing it).
