I've been told my whole life that alcoholism is hereditary. Is it? If so, how/why?

I don't believe so. What they probably mean by that, is just how parents habits are generally passed down to thier kids.

Everyone has the choice if they want to become an alcoholic or not. Each bottle is a conscious choice, as they have decided to go and buy it.
I don't believe it has MUCH to do with their upbringing.

And I 100% believe it is NOT hereditary.

Nope. Just never drink alcohol. You'll be fine.
