Why is everybody so hung up on getting followers on Ask?

Isn't it more important to just answer people's questions as well as you can and not with answers that you hope will get you more followers? And how pathetic is it to actually ask people to follow you? Sheesh!

It's a form (stupid one) or acceptance. Striving to be accepted by others is a very important survival skill. All animals try to do it. That why virtually every pack critter will punish bad behavior with isolation. We are safer together and will always strive for that togetherness.

Humans are competitive by nature. Therefore, they always want more followers or helpful stars than the next person. It is just like Facebook or twitter.
