Why ask him? Presidents don't control worldwide market prices on gasoline--or anything else for that matter. Oil companies do.

Because there was a light rain just south of Guam.... that is enough for the Oil company's to justify an increase....

Y dont we stop using oil than:)

@Glory: Domestic oil production is at 10-year high. Higher gas prices are simply a result of oil companies being motivated by profits. Like Nick said, it's about supply and demand. Demand is up, so prices are up. It's really just that simple.

Israel attacks Syria, trouble in Egypt, Iran is still threatening to build nukes, Obamas is pushing a 'green' agenda......Just blame it on supply and demand, global conflict in the middle east means nothing! *smh*

try to fathom the figures. every day, thousands of kids are turning 16 and want to drive a car. EVERY DAY. fuel production is pretty much flat. more drivers, more cars, not more fuel

Domestic oil companies are now producing so much refined fuel that it is now our number one EXPORT. The oil companies are selling domestically produced fuels to other countries where they can make more money. That drives up the price for everyone. Oil companies are capitalist enterprises motivated by profits--not concern for any hardships higher gas prices might have on Americans.

Refining limitations.

Helpful Fun Thanks for voting Comments (2)
Report as
@Mgmarx: If refining is limited, why is domestically produced refined fuel in such high supply that it is now our number one export? The no new refineries is nothing more than a distraction. The oil companies have found that it is far more cost effective to expand existing refineries than build new ones. The critics always point to the slow down in new refineries, but never mention that existing refineries are expanding and producing more fuel that ever.

You are right but that is the explanation we are given. And market speculation.

@Callie: The only reason our economy isn't on its death bed is because of the fiscal policies of this president who saved millions of jobs by investing money in the auto industry (virtually all of which has been repaid) and instituting the necessary banking regulations to prevent such a near-catastrophe in the future. As a result we are slowing clawing our way out of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.
Report as
Matter of opinion.
Report as
What is an opinion? That we did not fall into another Great Depression? The consensus by economists was that it was likely to happen without the TARP bail-outs. It is not a matter of opinion that banking regulations have been put in place that will prevent such an event again. These are not opinions, and saying they are does not make them less factual.

The reason is the federal reserve. The more money they print the less your dollar is worth. This money printing by the feds is the cause of inflation. Most people are not paying attention and do not know what the consequence of the debt this country holds. Its just a matter of time before $4. is the norm then it will be $5. and then $6. and so on. This will also go with food prices and everything else . This is one reason Obama is not a good choice. He knows not how to quit spending.

Because too many idiots voted Obama back in - therefore, this country will be unable to put the XL pipeline into effect - and we will not make use of our own vast resources. Hello!

Report as
Hello! The XL pipeline must meet environmental impact studies like anything else. The Republican governor of Nebraska was instrumental in blocking plans to build it as it was to pass through the Ogallala Aquifer which supplies ~30% of the United States total irrigation water and ~82% of the drinking water for the ~2 million people in that area who depend on that water to remain uncontaminated. TransCanada, the foreign company who wants to build the pipe line extension, said it would bring down gas prices by 3.5 to 4 cents per gallon. That is almost certainly an overly optimistic projection given the impact of the world market on oil prices.

The bottom line is that any oil that comes out of that pipeline, or the resulting refined fuel, will be sold on the world market to the highest bidder.
Report as
I realize this is of no interest to you, but a great many Canadians are adamantly opposed to the XL pipeline, and none of them voted for Obama
Report as
@Jc: I forgot to mention that, in response to your comment that "we will not make use of our own vast resources", domestic oil production is at it highest since 1988 and has resulted in an actual decrease in imported oil according to the Energy Information Administration.

Dang guys. Ruining rants with facts again?

So many anti Obama rants that have nothing to do with the price of oil. I wish people would learn how this country operates...
A number of reasons...
Experts say the red-hot global economy, including tensions in the Middle East, coupled with refineries undergoing maintenance and panic over dwindling supplies creates the perfect storm that sends gas prices through the roof.

"We are at the heart of a major refining area that have shutdowns or maintenance issues," said KTRK political consultant Dr. Richard Murray. "Our gas prices mostly move with those in the nation, but we have some unique factors in Houston that can cause the price to fluctuate more than in other cities."

But cal, it HAS to be obamas fault!!
Report as
I know Boo. There is just no way something someone doesn't like is happening somewhere in the world that can't be blamed on Obama. The solution is to follow Archy Bunker's lead and just make up our minds that Obama is evil and not allow ourselves to be confused by the facts.

Cute, but presidents don't control gas prices. Oil and refined fuels are sold as a commodity on the world market, and the world market sets the prices.
