What happens to an airplane when it's struck by lightning?

Report as

Don't worry, there are no extra charges.

(Sorry, had to say it.)

Oh...It is possible for the plane to still make it, but very unlikely.

So, in a storm, do you think it releases conductors like a jet fighter would with chaff?

The exterior of the plane refracts the lightning and channels it around the aircraft. No damage is done to the craft. Commercial airlines are struck by lightning many times.

Planes are designed to handle this. There is a video on Youtube of an A380 being struck and you can see the plane keep right on going after it happens.

Do you think if Zeus started bolting it, it would still be okay?
Report as
Yes they are designed to handle the most severe strikes. The strike in that video is extremely severe. It's a great advertisement for Airbus.
Report as
Okay, that's pretty cool I didn't know that

I wonder if the people inside could feel it...
Report as
You should look up that video it's really neat. Put in the search A380 getting struck by lightening.
Report as
People don't feel it at all. The plane acts as a giant lighting rod.

Usually only scorch marks where the lightening actually hit the airplane. Typically on a wingtip. Rarely are any electronic issues caused by lightening strikes. Routinely the airplane will land at the nearest airport after a lightening strike. This a precaution only. Airliners are usually struck about once a year.

Nothing. Planes are hit by lightning all the time. If you've ever flown anywhere, you're plane has probably been hit by lightning.

Well as long as the piolet is a good driver I believe that everyone will be okay. If it has happened before and no injuries.

Used to whenever airplanes would face this ordeal of being struck by lighting the fuel tanks would explode and cause problems then eventually the plane most usually always went down, but now airplanes are supposed to be more improved than what they were before and are said now that they can withhold a lighting strike so possibly nothing would happen unless it was just unlucky for that plane to face trouble being struck then guess what it's going down....

I've never flown before, I'm starting to want to do it just for the sake of being in the air. Sometimes I wish I was a bird
Report as
Same here, but you wishing you were a bird would just probably fall straight down smacking the ground hard and having feathers fly everywhere from getting shot down possibly by a little kid with a BB gun too Lmfao!!! xD
