How do i backup a PS3 hard drive?

I bought an external hard drive to back-up my PS3 hard drive. How do i back-up the PS3 hard drive when the PS3 doesn't recognize the external hard drive?

If the hard drive is not recognized, you may have to format it for it to restore the file format. You can also test the hard drive on a different machine to see if it works and then install the supporting files. Contact a technician for further assistance.
