A pole star is different from other stars in that is uses celestial navigation while the other stars' positions alternate as the night goes by. The pole stars' location does not change because its position is close to one of the celestial poles.

The North star is different from other stars in that its apparent position doesn't change as the planet revolves. It is always directly above the North pole any time of year.
