How long after a cataclysmic world event ( like an asteroid collision) would it take for the earth's population to rebound?

All population levels, Human, Animal, Plant.

Well if a 8km wide asteroid hit the earth lava would spew up and would end up completely covering the planet in 24hr. There is a great YouTube video on it but I forget what it is called. Don't know if the population would rebound...

If the asteroid is big enough, it can wipe out all life on earth. It depends on the size of the asteroid and the location that the impact occurs.

It depends on the scale of the cataclysm. A large enough asteroid can punch a hole in Earth's crust and kill EVERYTHING.
Anyway, a smaller-scale cataclysm could create varying degrees of damage. It would depend on short- and long-term damage and the type of cataclysm. The range of possibilities is too broad to speculate.
Luckily, at least with an asteroid, we'd probably see it coming years if not decades in advance, so we could try to stop it. Actually, that might be good for the world in the long run, as long as we actually can find a way to stop it.

It took mankind, once we reached a tribal status, about 120,000 years to spread from Africa around the planet. So I would think about that long for some surviving pocket of man to reclaim the planet. Perhaps a little less as even if books were all destroyed, some memory would remain of how to do things, like build rafts, plant crude gardens, etc. Depending on how damaged the rest of the planet was; geography would be a whole new ball game.
