Why is my hamster trying to bite me? Read below.

my hamster keeps trying to bite me! I'm always gentle with her, and I like let her eat her food when she needs to and all of that stuff. Recently , she has started to bite me. When I first got her I didn't have that problem. Now, when im starting to think that she is pregnant, ( because her butt has gotten really big and she eats in the corner of her cage a lot and she makes like little burrow kind of things) she has begun to bite me. ( at least two times she has drawn blood on my finger). Some days she doesn't bite me though. But like today she tried to like draw blood on my finger. (Yeah, I know that hamsters like to nibble on people's fingers, but I know she isn't trying to nibble on my fingers out of curiosity.) Also, she is a Russian Dwarf hamster. Please help! Thanks! :)

Maybe before u got her she was in a cage with a male, so she might be pregnant. Try not to bother her to much. Maybe she needs space or something .

Hamsters are mean! especially dwarfs I'd suggest maybe just looking at it and occasionally poke it with you're finger but watch out! it bites.

Have you accidentally hurt it? Or has someone else, it could be just protecting its injurie.

No. It's perfectly fine.

I wouldn't know, save up a few dollars and take her to the vet to check her up. But then again it could be anything from her pubescent era, to you switching the brand of food you feed her.

I have perfume on my wrist. I don't know if that effects anything though.

Animals have a very keen sense of smell ... That could be very strong and offensive to her. Wash it off really well and see if it makes a difference.

It could be you are not handling her enuf or not handling her right like my lizard used to be nice but then I stopped handling her and she but me when I tried again but then I figured out she thought I was a preditor grabbing her from the top but if I grab here from the bottom she doesn't care so it could be that or she just doesn't like being handled any more... Or maybe you hands smell like food

But the thing is, I can't handle her she won't let me. She will like draw blood on my finger if I try to play with her.

Defense mechanism. You're invading their personal space. If they start to get antsy gently blow on their faces.

I have had it like for a week or longer. And it hasn't been acting this way when I got her from my science teacher.

Usually when they are coming from pet stores they haven't had much handling. Be persistent. It will take a while but continue to handle her. I had this problem with my guinea pigs.I had one that would bite and run. Try reaching in and just petting for a short while and then leaving. This way she doesn't think you are going to grab her every time. Try hand feeding her, and only handle her for short amounts of time but daily. This should help acclimate her to human handling :)
