The only options are cat 5/5e/6 802.3 Ethernet (wired) or WiFi 802.11 b/g/n Ethernet (wireless). No computer is needed for either of these. What you do need is:

A) a modem has wireless built in
B) a wireless router connected to the modem via Cat 5 ("Ethernet")
or C) to connect the PS3 to the modem using Cat 5 ("Ethernet").

Even if the modem supports WiFi, or you get a router that supports wifi, you may have to connect the PS3 to the device with a cat 5 ("Ethernet") cable in order to set up the modem/router.

I would HIGHLY recommend connecting the system with a cable rather than wifi though if you're playing multiplayer games online. A wired internet connection will be far more stable than a wireless connection in most household settings.

can I so that without a router? its the only device I want to run. connect the modem to the ps3 directly threw the ethernet cable?

Yes you can. You'll get a better connection without a router anyways because the PS3 won't have to fight with the routers firewall (a big problems for some people using their PS3)

Just plug the modem into the telephone/cable/dsl/optical connection for the internet, connect an "ethernet" cable to the modem, and plug the other end of the cable into the back of the PS3.

I don't think so. Sorry.

No, cause it needs a password with Internet.

can't I set that up on the ps3 browser? I have a mobile hot spot, but its week and only works on the browser, not psn or netflix. I keep hearing different stories on if its possible or not. can I set up the security info for the modem using my hotspot on the browser until the modem is setup? I don't see why it wouldn't work but I wanna be sure before I waste money. its the only device I have that would be connected threw the modem.

Let me ask a stupid question: What type of modem do you have and does it require authentication of some sort with your ISP?

I'm assuming you have a cable or DSL modem that uses strait DHCP to get an IP from your provider. If this is the case then what I said applies.

If you on the other hand have a modem that requires the attached device to authenticate with the provider (PPPoE such as a cellular modem, PPTP, or L2TP) then you're pretty much screwed.

I don't have anything yet. I'm seeing if its possible before I waste money on it.

If you check out the internet service providers in your area they can tell you whether your modem reqires authentication before you sign up with them. Explain to them that you're trying to hook up only a PS3 and they can tell you.

You cannot hook a broadband router to your PS3 directly without any computer. You need to have a computer and a router so that you can be able to make the connections.
