Mandatory national service of some kind, yes. Military only, no. Some people are not suited to the military life. I got in enough trouble with mps as a civilian, if I had joined, I would have done my entire service in the brig.
But it should be required that everybody give something of themselves to improving our country

The draft started around the time we entered WWI (1940) and continued on into 1970, of course they can force people to do that.

Not anymore.

You are right, the change came from Nixon. But if they choose to do so, they can change it back.

No, I don't think it should be mandatory. However, I think it should be considered to be one alternative to earning US citizenship.

Right off the top of my head I'd day no. But thinking about it more it probably wouldn't be a bad idea. A structured military lifestyle for even 2 years would certainly do every young person some good. This is something we should look into deeper. I believe this could help in changing attitudes and become a beginning to turning this country. Good question. Thank you.

No. The only reason I say this is because some Americans have religious reasons as to why they can not enlist. Their faith so strong that they're willing to go to prison over their beliefs

No, however I believe one criteria for POTUS should be to have at least served one hitch. If you want to send my son to war you should know what it's all about. Just my opinion.

I wholeheartedly agree with Boo. I will add that when we invest ourselves in something we tend to appreciate it more, and be more concerned about its well-being. Mandatory service of some kind would absolutely make for better citizens. It would also bring us all closer together by giving each of us a shared connection.

I agree with Boo, via Caltex. It could also work as a method to give people an education in a particular field that could aid in finding a job in the private sector.

It has been done in the past, during times of war. I suspect we will need to activate the draft again, sometime. But the circumstances appear as far off as World War I did in 1870.

Military service, no. Not everyone is up to the task. As mentioned above, some form of public service is a good idea.
