not sure who the people are that take these polls and how accurate they are. I am not a member of NRA and I am pretty sure I am not fresh from the looney bin but I still oppose. There are SO MANY things the Government should be focusing on that could help our country that gun checks are way down low on the totem pole
I am. We already do background checks using the N.I.C. system. And we already have over 9500 rules and regulations on the industry now. We need rigorous enforcement of the laws we have now, not more to make people "feel good" just for the political theatre it creates. Strange isn't it that we throw money at our inner cities to feed failed programs to prevent gang violence, yet as such an abject failure as they are, we just keep throwing money down the drain, instead of enforcing the laws concerning the criminality created by such gangs. And to close, even David Axelrod, advisor to Obama, knows that the 500+ murderer in Chicago, NONE, were commited using an assault style weapon! Strange how THAT never makes the front page! Remember, criminals won't do background checks. Ladywood, was that 92% of PROGRESSIVES polled in this slanted question of yours? Remember, Qininnipiac is one of the most liberally slanted polling groups in America. But what's a little more propaganda from the left, they can't argue the FACTS and win!
Most states already do background checks!! The govt. hasn't put anything in place to handle the flood of new background checks!! The other possible problem, is it could lead the a registry of all gun owners, which is what happened in NAZI Germany, and all the guns were confiscated!!
Gun checks become gun registration and inevitably results in confiscation in everywhere it's been done, this is the reasoning behind some opposing the universal checks. The reasoning does not have to be real to be a real fear; one is prudent to avoid any foreseeable results. besides, only the law-abiding will do the checks; criminals will avoid the checks and will steal or illegally buy the guns they need. Therefore, it's merely a restriction on the law abiding and not an impediment to criminals getting guns. The majority of gun violence is drug related. We can't do anything significant to gun violence without addressing the root cause: drug abuse and illegal drug sales. If you remove all the gun violence related to drugs, and remove the guns related to suicide, our gun violence numbers decrease dramatically. Removing a gun from suicidal people does not improve suicide stats; guns are not available in Japan, but they have twice the suicide rate as we do. In Mexico, they have 10 times the gun violence we have, and 90 pct is related to drugs, despite having some of the most restrictive gun laws in the world.
Us 7% realize requiring background checks for every gun purchase will only affect the responsible and law-abiding gun owners. 99% of gun owners don't use their guns to commit a crime. Does anybody honestly believe thugs, criminals, and gang bangers will suddenly obey this law because it's passed? They already have little or no regard for the law, other's property, and for human life. This punishes the 99% because of the 1%. By they way a lot of gangbangers have illegal guns or illegally posses a gun now.
Why don't you look at what's happening in Australia? They have outlawed guns and now armed thugs are robbing law abides like crazy. Many people here believe outlawing assault weapons will be just the beginning in America and I agree!
