He was a World No. 1 professional tennis player, won 3 Grand Slam Titles ranking him among the best tennis players from the U.S.
The first African American ever selected to the United States Davis Cup Team and the only Black Man to win the Singles title at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, and the Australian Open. He retired in 1980. He contracted Aids in the late 1980's from a Blood Transfusion received during heart by-pass surgery. He founded the Arthur Ashe foundation and the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health before his death from Aids-related pneumonia Feb. 6, 1993. Was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in June of 1993 by President Clinton. (Wikipedia). There is lots more about his life and accomplishments if you need it.:-)
