What stresses act on bridges?

Tension and compression stresses the acts on bridges. Both of these forces are capable of damaging the bridge depending on weight of the load and other additional forces acts on the structure. For reference, go to http://science.howstuffworks.com/engineering/civil/bridge2.htm.
