If I were to move to America...

I live in the UK. I've lived here all my life. if I were to move to America, say, Tennessee. would my British accent fade, and become southern? or would it stay?

Report as

Interesting...my uncle moved north to Michigan from NC,and never lost his southern accent, but I know some who lose it after only a short time....Southern British may sound kinda cool.....

Chances are you won't lose it but over many years you should sound a little different.

It depends if you're there long enough or if you just maybe let it come naturally (: My best friend moved to England for 3 years and came back with just a slight British accent.

It takes years but it will fade some. People around you may not notice it but if you go back to the UK for a visit they will.

Oh, Kaitlin, move to Tennessee! That's where I live! I love English accents. It wouldn't change much, if it changed "a-tall" LOL Are you coming here to go to college? Just wondering why you mentioned Tennessee? You'll love our beautiful mountains, rivers and streams! Plus, in the fall, our trees turn magnificent colors!

Report as
Oh, you're welcome, sweetie. Now you've gone and got my hopes up. You shouldn't do that to a southern belle. We get our feelings hurt easily, don't you know? LOL (Oh, BTW, just excuse Dustee. She's talking like we usually talk to each other.) I'm trying to talk where you can understand me. ROFL!!!

Isn't that right, Dustee, my little hunny bunny!
Report as
I'm sorry. I didn't meant to get your hopes up. Haha. It seems like a nice place.(: and, I'll just ignore her, because I haven't a clue what she's saying. Hehe.

Report as
And I'm supposing knickers means pants? Oh, Kaitlin, this is too funny. I'm about to pee in them because you said you were going to ignore Dustee because you didn't have a clue to what she was saying. ROFL What a hoot!
Report as
I'm sorry, Dustee. I didn't know. I'll be sure to accept that invite one day.
Report as
this is my other account. i got locked out of my old one. oops. hehe. but, kickers is underwear. close to pants, but not exactly. haha. i really had no clue what she was talking about. i probably sound quite daft. :p

aw. thank you! I'll talk to you tomorrow then. good night.(:
Report as
Daft? I've only heard that one time & that was in Pirates of the Caribbean with my man Johnny Depp, as Captain Jack Sparrow. Someone said Elizabeth was daftney (?sp) and someone else said, "Yeah, daft like Jack." Explain?
Report as
daft is dumb. feeling stupid. haha. I love those movies.(:
Report as
I do, too. Except #3. It was just stupid. But I love that man. Yummy. Now I'm a little old to have a crush...54, but I just can't help it. I've got a really pretty Victorian bedroom with a canopy bed AND A BIG OLE PICTURE ON MY WALL OF CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW!!! ROFL
Report as
hahaha! I would love a poster of him. I have a picture of Ed Sheeran on my wall though. It must be nice having a canopy bed. haha. and, I dont think you're old. honest. You should see some of the people over here.
Report as
What do you mean some of the people over there, my dear?
Report as
I mean, some of the people cross the pond are older than you. haha. You don't seem old at all.
Report as
Well, I try not to look like it and I sure don't feel it "mentally". Now I do physically because I've got quite a bit of physical problems. But if you go by what my mind thinks, why, I'm just a spring chicken! LOL
Report as
spring chicken? haha. could you explain?
Report as
LOL Chickens have their babies (chicks) in the spring. So that basically means a "young person." Oh, my, this IS funny.
Report as
Ohhh! Haha! I should have got that! And yes, yes it is quite funny. *btw, I'm probably going to be switching from my other account to this one. Back and forth. Haha.*
Report as
Okey-dokey. Oops. That means okay. I'm probably going to have to give up the ghost here in a very few minutes here and go to bed. What time is it there? It's 11:15 p.m. here. Oops. Give up the ghost (for whatever reason) mean just give into something. Can't really explain that one, just what it means, not why. LOL
Report as
woah. i'm learning slang. yay. haha. and, its quite late over here. 4:14 am. i woke up and decided to post a question. haha.
Report as
Well, holy cow, girl, you need to get back in bed. And I'm an old woman, so I need to go to bed! I'd love to talk to you again, I really would. You're a hoot!
Report as
hahah. i think we should both sleep. i would absolutely love to chat with you again. You're a very nice person. haha. kinda like my mum in a way. but good night. ill talk to you later. sweet dreams. take care(:
Report as
Sweet dreams, sweetheart and you take care, too. Big hug (((Kaitlin))))
Report as
Hello, miss.(:
Report as
Kaitlin! I missed the notification that you had written back! Are you still on here? Are you still talking with me after "seemingly" ignoring you? I'm so sorry, dear. I wouldn't ignore you if my life depended on it. I hope all is well in jolly ole England. LOL I hope you'll forgive me & write back, my dear. I really miss your accent. ;-)

It depends on your age. The younger you are the easier to assimilate. I came to America at a young age. My accent comes out when I'm in a room full of people speaking the same way.

I doubt YOUR accent would fade. It would be more likely that you would pick up a bit of the local twang and it would mesh with yours. A combination of the two and you would be the only one with it.

I met a woman is Texas who had lived there over 25 years. When she began speaking, I had an idea that she was not from Texas even though she had the same twang and used the local vernacular. I am from California so the Texas twang sounds foreign to me. I asked her where she was from. She laughed and said she was from Scotland.

Peter Frampton lives in Cincinnati, Ohio and his voice sounds the way it did way back in 1978. I guess it'd stay, but it may be different for different people.
