People feel the need to impose their religions upon others, which can be taken as disrespectful. Non-religious get angry and bash their beliefs. There's no real proof for the existence of any god, so people feel the need to challenge their existence.

The idea of God is not controversial. Some things that Christians do are controversial, such as putting religion in our schools. People are slowly becoming more secularized, and this is not popular with some establishment Christians.
Anytime there are 2 differing parties of such extremes as religion and science, there will be controversy. Each side has strong opinions, beliefs and values in which they will stand up for and try to prove to one another. A constant battle for truth.
