Do you think the U.S. should get rid of the penny?

Support your opinion well please.

Prices will increase if we eliminate the penny, everything will have to be rounded to the nickel, charities need pennies because there are thousands of small charities that depend on penny drives to bring in donations and nickels cost even more to make so no :)

Prices will go up AND down. Like say something comes to $4.21, then its rounded to $4.20 (you save a penny), and if it comes to $4.24, then its rounded to $4.25 (you lose a penny). Losing or gaining a couple of sense isn't worth arguing over, considering many people lose that change anyways when they throw away pennies (which many people do). The penny cost more then its worth to make, and its further driving the US into debt. Charities will do just fine without them. Virtually, no coin accepting machine in the USA takes pennies, except the coin star machine and those little bubble gum machines you find in old banks. They wouldn't be missed. Canada, among many other countries, has gotten rid of the penny, and they're all doing just fine. Americans just have unrealistic worries of a change as little as the elimination of the penny...

no pennies can add up after a while and if you wanna make a payment of 2 dollars with pennies the retailer has the legal right to not accept it.

HelloPikachu

No!! It is important! There was a Chinese real story about an old man who dropped a penny or nickel and didn't care to pick it up because it is so little money. When he pays for the ferri to ride back to home, he was missing 1 or 5 cents!! He couldn't get home that time, and now he has to beg for money!! I feel so bad for him, but he lost his coins...he needs money... :(

if you drive, the penny should be your best friend.

how much gas you think you can get for a penny? very one always orders their gas to the nearest dollar anyway. HAve you ever heard any buy $5.37 in gas?
Lted's not get too absurd here. You are showing that you are only 13
Report as
whatever but still why get rid of the penny? little kids love finding them in the streets and plus there are millions of pennies, they could add up to millions of dollars for charity anyways..people that do the penny drive add up to a lot of money for the poor

The value of the penny should be changed from 0.01 to 0.02, that way you'll only have half as many in your pocket.

Although a bother to us in some ways, think about how in the world we'd give change without it!! What if someone asked for an amount ending in 1, 2, 3, or 4 cents? Plus, they really do add up, and just think about how cute it is to see a little kid find a penny on the side of the road and get all happy...

Not really. A ton of other countries in Europe have gotten rid of their one cent as well and have not experienced any problems with it.

If we are to get rid of them, we should, as a country, gather them together and pay off our debt! I bet there's $16 trillion dollars in change in someone's couch. For real, though, they are kind of a pain, but rounding up or down to the nearest $0.05 cents would kind of suck.

Helpful (2) Fun Thanks for voting Comments (5)

I like your thinking, I don't think the nearest 5 would suck, though. I'd think it'd be easier when trying to figure out expenses.

no because it would very hard to give change at stores. think about it! if something is 15.99 and you give them a 16 you need the penny back

You wouldn't have to worry about that because it'd be rounded to the nearest fifths.

Only if the price of postage stamps is in 5-cent increments. It's the best way I have to get rid of the pennies I have now, with the increase to 46 cents.

Of course the penny is unneeded now. When it was first introduced a dollar was a day's wages, and it was valid to divide it by 100, but now a penny is worth maybe i ten thousandth of a day's wage. Throw out the nickel too and quarter and make a 50 cent coin and a dime. That would dividce the dollar into 10 and no finer division is needed.

Yes.Round up for 50 cents and above and round down 49 cents and below.Example-If your change is 13 cents you would get a dime.If it was 16 cents you would get 20 cents. It evens out and is not unfair

i would say no not every one, just cut down production rate to about a quarter of what it is right now. then we'd still have enough for the 3 cents we might need at the gas station.

Of course not. You can be sure that when a small denomination is retired, then those that charge money for value (services, goods) will round up, not down. One cent will become five cents which means your toll has increased 80% and you've received no further value. Better to get rid of the twenty dollar bill and the hundred. We'll all deal with one and five dollar bills. Keeps your mind focused on just what you're handing over for that insane electronic device everyone seems to desperately need.

In Canada, who eliminated the penny, the change is rounded up to the nearest five cents. So if a total came out as $4.21, the total wouldn't be $4.25, it would be $4.20. Sometimes people would gain a few cents, other times they may lose a few cents. Nothing worth getting mad over, considering most people do nothing with their pennies anyway. The USA needs to get with the rest of the world and eliminate the penny. Besides, it cost more to make then its worth.

Yeah... Let's get rid of the penny, no, instead shall we just get rid of the whole lot of coins?! God... Why would you want to get rid of something that can really add up?! What if you were in some other country and didn't have any clean water or didn't have any food to eat?! Have you used your brains lately?
