The 240 GB HDD can fit in the 30GB iPod. It is actually very efficient as everything works great with the rockbox installed. Another advantage is that there is no lag whatsoever before or after the upgrade.

I would caution against doing so. The 30GB iPod may not be able to recognize the full 240GB, and if you attempted a firmware update the old logic board might not let you. New 7th Generation iPod Classics sell on eBay for only about $250. I recently started a small business dedicated to making 240GB iPods. What I particularly like about the 7th Generation iPod is the Genius feature. It allows you to create a playlist based on a song of your choosing - which can be very helpful if you have 240GB of music to manage!
When I first took apart my iPod I had a hard time of it. I snapped off the Logic Board power connector. A new one cost me $60. Afterward I had to replace the HDD as well: $85.
I'd like to help you, and others, avoid the hassle I went through. Please do contact me, either here or by email: newt.tsai at gmail.com if you're interested in purchasing a brand new, 240GB 7th Generation iPod Classic.
