What should I do ? Save every penny now for when I'm old and may not be here or have as much fun as I can now.I'm 47

Report as

Save every third penny! I worked too hard to get every tool and toy I wanted and get it all paid off before retirement! Missed vacation and fun things in the hopes of enjoying my old age. Nice plan, didn't work, too sick, tired, or just plain unable to use those things now! Time is getting shorter, I suggest you enjoy a little while you still can!

A little if both You're still going to have to live if you do make it to old age. Hope you don't expect others to support you

The very last thing I expect is anyone or depend on government to support me

That's good. It's the reason you need to do both.

Dude, I'm 49 and on the fence too. I've got 401k, a company pension (hopefully). Really doubting s.s. No real long term savings. IDK! Ain't here for a long time, just here for a good time-

My 401k has a 100% company match. I invest it very conservatively. What investment can do better than an instant 100% return?

don't be a mizer and its time to think about your life in twenty years so start saving some but by all means enjoy your life so when your old and rocking in a chair more hours of the day than sleeping you can think on your life and have a smile that every one will think your crazy

How about a compromise? Have fun, but save/invest your extra money for retirement. Being old, losing your earning power and living in poverty is NO fun. When I was young, someone told me to look at my life and decide if I would need money when I retired, or if I needed it more now. We were living on shoe-strings..putting all our money into our cattle ranch. I decided we needed to keep putting all our money into our ranch and when we were old, it would support us. I'm now retired and I was right....the cattle ranch is supporting a very good retirement for me now!

go half and half. Take the left over $ and put back for retirement and the other have fun with. There is nothing worse then being retired and having time to do things but no $ to be able to do anything. I see that all the time

I am saving max 401 and Roth but did not get that started till I was 40 so I could save more but don't want to give up life now in hopes of having plenty when I'm 67

well sounds like you are planning for the 67 so I'd say enjoy yourself a little now too
