How has the Bible changed your life?

Many have been able to break free from addiction, debased and immoral lives, or even reconnected with family. How has the Bible changed your life?

Report as

When I broke away from the bible and all it's crap I could actually start appreciating the value of living life and enjoying nature and the world around me. The bible and it's dogma was a sad chapter in my life.

Well I became a better person. I've been closer to family, been more positive, and have had less problems. I always was a Christian since I could think but reading the Bible really changed a lot of things in my life.

That's amazing! I'm so glad you were able to find true happiness by reading the Bible. What is your favorite scripture?

Probably Mark 8:36 "For what shall profit a man if he shall gain the whole world, but lose his own soul" I'm pretty sure it's something along that lines and it kinda is stuck in my head.
Report as
O that's a good one. Mine is probably Proverbs 24:16 "For the righteous one may fall even seven times, and he will certainly get up; but the wicked ones will be made to stumble by calamity." It shows that falling down isn't failing. Staying down is. =)

Interesting verse I should read more of proverbs from now on. It gives a lot of wisdom.
Report as
Yes, it does. I love Proverbs and Matthew. They have so much insight in them. And most of what those books say can be easily remembered.

I agree with you completely. In my opinion all those stories are just stories passed down through generations in the oral tradition until man kind came up with the idea of collecting all the stories and rules and put them in a book.

I had a friend who didn't believe in God, but felt the same way about the Bible. He just wanted to read it because he thought it was a good book! =) Anything in it that you really appreciate or are specifically fascinated by?
Report as
yes.
Report as
why are you asking me and all these others for?
Report as
Personally, I like talking about the Bible. I like to see why people read it and what they appreciate from it. Or what they find confusing or don't agree with or find hard to understand. I enjoy discussing it.
Report as
ok. my fave is the 23rd psalms. Beautiful. My worst are the begats. I realize that it is telling the lineage but BORING. The passage i loose sleep over is Jesus Wept. And the thing that confuses me most is Judas. And the reasons for the betrayal per say. And the other thing that irks me the most is when people "speak" for god. Example God probably wouldn't mind if you ....

I read different versions of Bible and I'm still amazed that believers will claim that they're simply different "translations" when entire books are missing and added to.

And it's too barbaric. I have the same problem with Bibles that Hong Kong had when it outright banned all of them. People who claim there's morality to be had from it don't do their own sense of morality any credit.
Report as
oh i see. Well I was told it was like a history of specific families and what happened to them ect. I actually find it fascinating reading. And I do find that some of the stories are trying to teach/relay a better way of acting/thinking. But I also love to read the teachings of the American Indians. They too have some Awesome stories and ways of thinking. I guess it is what you persieve as you read
Report as
ClaraListensprechen
True about American Indians. I have more respect for religions that respect nature than religions that build empires with religious megalomaniacs. But no Bible is any account of history any more than Gone With the Wind is an historical account of the Civil War. It may be based on historical stuff, but it's more a political soap opera than anything else. West Wing is more historically accurate.
Report as
Funny you should say that. I just had a huge "discussion" with a teacher concerning history and my belief that history is written by people who spin the truth or elaborate or embellish ect . I may not be getting an a in that course LMAO
Report as
ClaraListensprechen
There's always a way to get an A in spite of the teacher, actually. I had a bad habit of doing that, as it happens.

Your teacher might try this on for size: the quotation "history is always written by the victors" is not true for the Roman Empire. The history of "western civilization" is history written by the losers.

However, it takes a lot of research to back that up, but in backing such things up in writing is how I got my As. In spite of the teacher. ];->
Report as
lol. my problem is that I never think anything is a truth when it comes to history. I think that there is some truth but more or less think of them as stories written by people with an agenda...Now if I can see the actual original I am ok per say.
Report as
ClaraListensprechen
The original has its own bias, of course. Never believe a word from Caesar about how glorious Caesar was when he vanquished the enemy. Never believe the enemy regarding how evil Caesar was. It's more valuable to interview the disinterested party bystander, and then triangulate. "First source" material is overrated.

dawnbright, Psalms 23 is excellent! I enjoy reading it as well. It'sshort an simple. And those lineages are definitely hard to read, aren't they? Why do you lose sleep over Jesus weeping? Is that the account with Lazarus that you're talking about? And according to the Bible, Judas betrayed Jesus because after Jesus had publicly rebuked the religious leaders of that time, they were seeking to kill him. Judas knew this, and because he was a greedy individual, he bargained with the priests to betray Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. His greed is seen when Lazarus' sister, Mary, greases Jesus' head with oil. Judas objects to it, because they could've sold the oil for 300 denarii. Judas, being the one who held the money box, obviously wanted to profit any way he could. (Mark 12:3-6). I agree, no one should speak for God. They should read the words of the Bible, which let us know exactly how He feels about everything.

I understand the "why" as stated..But not the why god chose him. in simple terms

Honestly it's a really good fiction book. I don't think it ever had an impact on my life. People say its the book of god but god himself or Jesus never picked up the pencil and wrote it themselves it's just a collection of stories that man decided to write down. That is my opinion I don't consider myself an atheist but I'm also not religious I really don't care if there is a god or not. I respect all those with religion and who believe in god but I just don't see myself ever really accepting that he exists.

"Sink the Bible to the bottom of the ocean, and still man's obligations to God would be unchanged. He would have the same path to tread, only his lamp and guide would be gone; the same voyage to make, but his chart and compass would be overboard!"
Henry Ward Beeche
It has changed by life because, it reveals a God who loves me.

The Bible has revealed to me the grace, truth and love that Jesus has for me.
It has revealed to me that He IS Grace, Truth, and Love. The Way, the Great I Am.
Everything!
It led me to seek Him thru the power of the Holy Spirit.
And to rest in Jesus' finished work for me.
It led me to realize I had hope in this life and the one to come.
Pastor Joseph Prince speaking of his Bible teaching said; "I want to produce in you right believing so you have right results."
It is wonderful stuff!
