The advantage is everything is provided up front, not as much start up risk. But yes, they control absolutely everything and you are contractually obligated to comply. Do you have the personally for following orders?

If you don't know what the heck you're doing, then a franchise may be a good way to go. If you don't have the money to market your product/service properly, then a franchise may be a good way to go. Otherwise, you can probably save a lot of money and legal trouble by going your own way. However, if you're entering an industry with big competitors, you may not be able to make a go of it without a large company backing you. In that case, you might consider joining a cooperative (like Ace Hardware stores) rather than buying a franchise.
