The sun is made up of huge spheres of hot gas. 70% of the gas is hydrogen, 28% is helium while carbon, nitrogen and oxygen make up 1.5%. The remaining 0.5% is made up of small amounts of many other elements such as neon, iron, silicon, magnesium and sulfur. Note that, the sun shines as it is burning hydrogen into helium in its extremely hot core. Visit http://www.space.com/17170-what-is-the-sun-made-of.html for details.
