Why is it that dinosaurs are not mentioned in the Bible or any other works of literature from thousands of years ago?

Since the Bible is true than the world is approximately 5,000 years old. So why is there no mention of them?

Report as

Because the bible was written by a band of largely illiterate Bronze Age nomads who were backward even for their time.

The same is said for all denizens of the Bronze Age and even Iron Age: nobody knew about dinosaurs, not just the writers of the Bible. The scientists and even atheists of the age did not know of dinosaurs either.
.
You seem harsh about the writers of the Bible, yet the codification of laws, the moral instruction and indeed most morality is similar to that of atheists. How did they get their codified morals, if not from the Jews?
Most often, I hear atheists say they get it from society, from common men; that begs the question, from whence did society get them? It's worth giving a moment of consideration, even if you think it's not from God.
Report as
Secular codes of law and morality long predate the Jewish people. The Chinese had them, the Babylonians and Sumerians had them. The Egyptians had them. Not to mention that the vast majority of the codes and morals of the Jews were ritualistic bunk that applied only to their religion and what people it's ok to hate or kill.
Honestly, the arrogance of Judeo-Christians, to think everything stems from their religion when civilized society far predates it.

Societal morals are evolutionary imperatives- cooperative species developed morality because it have them a survival and reproductive advantage. We see the rudiments of our own morality in other cooperative species. It's not difficult at all to see where we got our morals if you don't have confirmation bias.
Report as
I stand corrected. Of course, Jews were completely unoriginal and any correlation between today's morals and those of the Jews is merely happenstance. ;)
Report as
Just think of the internal contradiction implied by "the Bible was written by largely illiterate..." and you will find my amusement. Secondly, I believe you are implying all cooperative species have morality. This is intriguing, do you have examples? Or maybe a reading?
Report as
Of course they were unoriginal- anyone with even a rudimentary knowledge of ancient history is well aware of the many codes of law and morality that predates them.

I said the Hebrew people were largely illiterate. They were- only a few of the priest class were literate, and it was they who penned the first versions of Genesis and Exodus which, mind you, only date back to around 800BCE.

Well simply because they never knew they were there. The dinosaurs went extinct before mankind even populated the earth. By the time man did populate the earth, the dinosaurs had gone extinct. Excavations and the realization of the dinosaur skeletons buried under the earth was not found until much later after the "final version" of the bible had been written.

Not all animals are mentioned. We really don't know what took place when, as God STARTED creating. I believe they were here and He had them wiped out because they were destroying eachother, much like man is now. God knew we could not survive with them.

I've wondered that also. There are passages in the bible that can lead you to believe dinosaurs where spoken of in the bible. When the bible was written they did not use the word dinosaur. There is evidence that dinosaurs existing when humans did. When god first created earth, people liked for hundreds and hundred of years. Lizards grow their whole entire life, so if lizards were to live hundreds of years, they would be huge, and I believe that's what dinosaurs were.

maby dinosaurs were warm blooded reptiles? there is no link between birds and "reptiles". your argument is invalid. @skeptic
Report as
There is no such thing as a warm blooded reptile.

The bone structure and other morphology of dinosaurs and birds is an obvious linkage.

There are indeed mass graves of dinosaurs, but not from flood and nowhere near the time humans were in existence. There has NEVER been human remains and dinosaur remains found in the same geological strata. We are separated by millions of years.

You can't just make things up- you must have actual evidence for your claims and science disproves all of yours.

Job 40:15-18 sure sounds like dinosaurs to me: "Behold, Behemoth, which I made as I made you; he eats grass like an ox. Behold, his strength in his loins, and his power in the muscles of his belly. He makes his tail stiff like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are knit together. His bones are tubes of bronze, his limbs like bars of iron." No modern animal accurately fits all of those details. References to the leviathan in Job chapter 41 are also very dinosaur-like. If young earth creationists are correct that dinosaurs and humans coexisted, Job 40-41 could very well be referring to dinosaurs.(cont in comments)

Outside of the Bible, there is additional possible evidence of dinosaurs and humans coexisting. Nearly every ancient culture has stories of giant reptiles (dragons). How would cultures spread out all over the world, such as the Romans, Mayans, and Babylonians all come up with such remarkably similar legends without some truth being the driving force behind those legends? Petroglyphs, artifacts, and even clay figurines resemble dinosaurs. Rock carvings depict men riding dinosaur-like creatures, and, remarkably, are very similar to museum portrayals of the triceratops, pterodactyl, and tyrannosaurus rex. So, all that to say, there is interesting, even compelling, evidence that human beings and dinosaurs did in fact coexist. http://www.blogos.org/gotquestions/dinosaurs-bible.html
Report as
There is zero scientific evidence dinosaurs and humans coexisted and in fact proof they didn't. Such beliefs are nonsense plain and simple.
Report as
Most folktales of dragons can be traced to comet events in the sky and the random find of fossil remains that ancient people could not understand. Solid evidence of humans and dinosaurs living at the same time would include things such as cut marks in dinosaur fossils, dinosaur egg shells and bones in prehistoric human settlements, side by side footprints (and before anyone says it, the Texas find in the 70's has long been proven a hoax) and there is absolutely none, zero, zilch, out of millions of finds worldwide.

The details are arbitrary and yet special selections are made. Seeing as how interpretation is all we have nothing can be said for certain and your claim that its "just a figure of speech" could just as easily be said of the entire end chapter of the bible. Funny how we choose which ridiculous non sense in the bible is true and which ridiculous non sense is a figure of speech, not meant to be taken literally or only applicable in certain circumstance despite not Claus for such or directions. It's all convenient and expedient and that's why it's believable to you people- it's tells the truth- even when it lies, like scarface.

The age of the Earth is not mentioned in the bible, as to your "5000 years old" comment, that was made up by an Irish Archbishop named Ussher in 1650 ad, he judged the earth was created on Oct.14th 4004 bce.

I did not get my 5000 years from an Irish Archbishop. I calculated it myself. A.D. years started being counted when Jesus was born. Obviously that would be 2013 years ago. Guessing the amount of years before Christ (B.C.) I landed on 3000 years. Altogether, that equals approximately 5000 years. Besides, what proof do you have that the earth is 300 million years old?

As to the age of the earth, it's hard to state objectively as the inflation of the universe has evidently caused time to dilate also, as they are in a matrix (inflate one, and the other inflates). But assuming a fixed reference point outside the universe, time and space have dilated at such a rate that the apparent limits of the universe (~13.4 billion years) are set. If the universe is larger than this, we cannot know (speed of light is an information limit). Here is a good reference on cosmological ideas: http://pages.towson.edu/zverev/universe/Universe.htm

Because they did not exist during the time of the writers of the Bible. They appear to have predated recorded history, and thus were not recorded by Socrates, Plato, or any other historian of antiquity, including Moses. To ask why they were not recorded implies a supernatural knowledge, and there is no indication any holy (or unholy) man has had such a knowledge. So, it's customary to question people for what they know that isn't so, rather than what they don't know that nobody else of their time knew.

The Bible is true. That doesnt mean the world is nearly 5,000 years old, Ik where you get that from. It doesnt mention the dinosaurs because its not important. The Bible is the story of humanity and God, and the things before humanity that have to do with us. By that, I mean the fall of the angels. Nothing else is important, nothing else is mentioned.

From Adan to Noah were about 1,000 years, and the Bible doesnt mention ages of when the next generations came to be. Also, take in count that the Bible talks about the story of humanity, not of the Earth. Genesis says that the world was organized in seven days, but the days of God are not the same as the days of humans, specially when there was no sun to tell the days. This might save you some arguing with the non believers. Gby

This question brings up a few more, but lets address this one first. Some above me try to say that the leviathan and Behemoth are indicating that the Large Reptilian creatures (dkks that was just for you :P) are mentioned in the bible, the problem is the Behemoth was mentioned to Job to "Behold" now they died out 65 million years before Job lived (if he ever did) so there is no way he could have beheld one at all, so no, nice try though.

The reason is no one ever knew they had ever existed and ruled the earth before Man ever arrived, so why the bible never mentions that period of time, is because it is not inspired from any deity.

Also why does not the bible not mention the other human species that were pre-Homo sapiens that lived before us? They were on about the same intelligence and abilities as us, but did god kill them off because he felt he screwed up? Who knows.

The Bible being right does not mean the world is only 6,000 years old. That's only the OPINION of some people, and supported by nothing as such, but the Bible does not say that. Dinosaurs are not mentioned in the Bible because none of its authors or their contemporaries had any notion of a dinosaur. The Bible was written such that people living back then would understand. Describing animals they never saw, whose fossils they never studied would be incomprehensible to them.

Some dinosaurs (and pterosaurs) may indeed have been created in the fifth era listed in Genesis, when the Bible says that God made “flying creatures” and “great sea monsters.” Perhaps other types of dinosaurs were created in the sixth epoch. The vast array of dinosaurs with their huge appetites would have been appropriate considering the abundant vegetation that evidently existed in their time.—Genesis 1:20-24.
When the dinosaurs had fulfilled their purpose, God ended their life. But the Bible is silent on how he did that or when. We can be sure that dinosaurs were created by Jehovah for a purpose, even if we do not fully understand that purpose at this time. They were no mistake, no product of evolution.
