Why do some people choose friends over family?

My brother does this frequently! I want to spend more time with him but his friends keep getting in the way. Isn't it terrible that he choose friends over his own family?! I just don't understand why people do this. Shouldn't his priorities be family then school then friends? Is there any way that I can convince him to change his priorities?

No. Family is way more important than friends.

Family is something you see all the time. Sometimes you get to know each other a little too well and all you want is a break from them. Tell your brother you feel left out or, step back a little bit and pretend your not interested in hanging out with him and one day he will come to you instead

It is part of the growing up process. Sooner or later people need to move out and live on their own. To prepare for this you start pulling away from your family while in your teens. It is all quite normal. I would talk to your brother and tell him you understand that he is growing up, but that you don't want to grow apart. Ask him if he can give you a couple of hours a week just to be brother time. Tell him you miss your time together.

I don't know, but sometimes at that moment, your emotions may be different and it triggers decisions

That as they say is life. Im' much closer to my siblings now. Even if it's only 13 months (as with me) it just gets to a point that things change. My mom said that we were inseparable until 12 or so & that was it. Maybe 1 being in puberty & the other about to changes things. Friends & the lumpy friends begin to be more fun. I don't think that it's a conscious decision it's just part of growing up

Friends are never better than family. You have your family forever and you have your friends for a short time, because they end up back-stabbing you, lying to you, and more. Unless you're friends with men. My guy-friends are better than my girl-friends. I will always look back at my family no matter what. They're not the best family, but I still love them.

Some people can tell friends things they can't tell there family. I personally would never choose friends over family but I definitely tell friends more then I tell family just because my family Is very judge mental.

Teenagers really value their friends. It doesn't mean he doesn't still care about his family and you. The thing is his family has always been there for him and will always be there. He wants to see something of the outside world and people who like him and choose him for being himself.

It just goes with the old adage "you can choose your friends, but not your family"

Adolescence! He's "finding" himself, and being with family isn't something he wants right now. Let him do his thing. As long as he's not hurting himself or anyone else, he should be ok
