What defines intelligence?

Just interested in knowing if you follow the word by the dictionary definition, or if you think there is more to intelligence then just overall smarts. So, what defines intelligence to you?

The way I think of it there are those who can actually answer real questions on Ask.com and those who can only answer "What's your favorite color?"

In my point of view, intelligence is recognizing when you are wrong and when you are always wanting to learn more. To me it has nothing to do with what you really know.

Intelligence has been defined in many different ways including, but not limited to, abstract thought, understanding, self-awareness, communication, reasoning, learning, having emotional knowledge, retaining, planning, and problem solving.

Intelligence is most widely studied in humans, but has also been observed in animals and in plants

I think intelligence is simply the efficiency of the brain, implying speed, accuracy and completeness, in processing information and thoughts to arrive at conclusions and judgments.

Smart = you know the answer to questions even if you just memorized it.
Intelligent = you know the answer and you understand what it means.
Wise = you know the answer, understand what it means, and know how to use the information in life.

I think of intelligence as critical thinking and problem solving. There are many different areas of intelligence and many different ways of being intelligent. Some people are book-smart, able to learn new things and grasp new concepts easily. Some people are very practical minded, able to solve problems to everyday situations. Some people think meticulously and methodically and some think in the abstract. The brain works in many different ways and no one way is superior to another for all situations. The wonderful thing about this world is that we need all types to make it work.
