For running big programs like maya 3D or other graphic programs what kind of system runs the smoothest? Mac? pc? a certain type of pc build?

i tried running the maya 2012 trial on my quad core 8 gb ram 550ti graphic pc i built and it wont even open the files to big or something idek help!?!
