What should be consequences for not eating lunch at school

My 5- year old comes home every day just to raid the fridge and cabinets. Come to find out, she doesn't touch any of her school lunch. What should I do? Make her starve til dinner at 6?

Have you tasted the school "food" ? Pack her a lunch. Small portions, easy to open. Plus they only get 15 minutes to eat! I would put cubed ham in a baggy. handful of raisins, some nuts, pretzels, seedless grapes. stuff like that. Any thing the have to open - like pudding, lunchables I would stay away from.

Umm, federal minimum lunch time is 28 minutes. I know because my school was at that limit.
Report as
She is extremely picky so its hard but she LOVES fruits yogurts and well chips
Report as
28 minutes includes getting the food. You wait in line if you do not pack. AND the faster the kids get done the more time they have at recess....5 year olds do not plan ahead well lol

yep. I have a good memory of being 5

Me too!!
My fiancée is saying we shouldn't give her her way by packing her lunch? Its so conflicting especially since he's trying to be the father figure
..grrrr
Report as
hmmog that is a control freak. CONTROL issue. What is his reasoning? Does he not remember what it is like to be a kid? I can't stand one who picks at and gets kicks out of I AM IN CHARGE type moments. lol good luck with your fiance'e. You are going to have issues forever if he is like that nw. Does the kid not have a father?
Report as
Yep sure is!!unfortunately I know :-( . Can't take it And yeh she has a father but he's not worth a damn
He said regardless if it's nasty or not she will eat if she's hungry he did but he will eat anything!! .
Report as
Oh and she lies and says she ate a little so he said we need to punish her for a week old lie too.
Report as
my advise to you is to tell him to pick his battles more carefully. I am an extemely picky eater and that is me. A part of me. just like it is a part of her. And I would pack her lunch. period. It would not be open for for a fight. And I wouldn't fight about it. No matter what he said I would tell him to pick a better battle and walk away.
Report as
she lied because to try to explain the truth was too difficult to explain. And the consequences for not eating er lunch was already known to her. I'm sorry for you. You are feeling caught in the middle and that is wrong. This guy has issues and is using the kid as an outlet. I am not sure how long you have been together but I am telling you this will get worse and worse if it doesn't stop.
Report as
parents are supposed to work together. if you 2 have not sat down and discussed how you will agree on parenting then you should not be engaged to this guy and he should not be living with you and your child

Thanks Dawn! I knew I waa right from the startt :-)
You do have good advice as well
Our 2 yr has no problem eating guess she gets that from him huh

Why doesn't she eat it? Have you tried packing a lunch for her? I would remind her you're paying for that lunch, and yes I would make her wait until a SCHEDULED snacktime or dinnertime. Meaning you can set up a snack, just have it planned out (and you can have a snacktime of all veggies or something healthy.) She'll figure it out quickly.

have you eaten school lunches lately? They are GROSS. They are not made @ school just reheated or served cold. I would pack her lunch. I ate my lunch but still came home and wanted to raid the fridge.
Report as
My school lunches were never bad. But then again, depending on your location, my school was probably much smaller than yours. Of course they're reheated, have you ever tried fixing food for 300 kids from scratch?
Report as
Yeh so did I
Good points

Maybe something out of lunch category but fun, healthy cereal might work. Try little easy to peel Clementine oranges or use cookie cutter to shape sandwich. It's all about healthy plus fun.

School lunches are very unhealthy because they contain a lot of unnecessary fats and empty calories. The children do not have enough time to eat which is also unhealthy. School lunches usually taste horrible. Pack her a lunch of a peanut butter sandwich or ham sandwich, some fruits like bananas or cutie clementines, and a yogurt, and maybe a protein bar or fiber bar or energy bar, and lastly maybe some candy she can eat as a treat. Make sure she also drinks a lot of water.

I don't blame that kid for not eating school lunch! My lunches were like the stuff you read in books.. Mystery meat Tuesday ... Yay ... Not. I would pack her lunch.

try packing her lunch, and if she doesn't eat that, then make her wait until scheduled dinnertime or snacktime. I totally understand, school lunches usually taste totally disgusting. and lunch is usually alloted only about 15 minutes, which is so unhealthy but beyond our control.

But she doesn't eat breakfast or lunch then comes home and won't stop and she's really really skinny!!
Report as
Then make her eat a little something then in the morning. If she says no then tell her she can't watch tv that day or take away something she enjoys doing. I tell you she'll break and do what you say. Stick to it though and don't give in. Tough love girl

Report as
she won't starve... she eats when she gets home. she probably don't like the food, I don't blame her. try packing her lunch. she could be preoccupied talking with her friends. discuss the issue with her, ask her if she want you to pack a lunch that she'll like and actually eat
