What is MSG, and is it bad for you?

I've heard about this chemical in foods called MSG, but why does it have a bad reputation? Should I try to avoid it?

MSG is called "monosodium glutamate." It is, basically, salt and fat. It was originally derived from boiled seaweed. The small addition of salt from MSG enhances flavors - like the difference between watery soup and flavorful chicken broth. Real MSG is not harmful - plenty of studies have shown that "MSG headaches" are usually due to a placebo effect - though additional chemicals in MSG products can be harmful. However, a high intake of salt (in general, not just MSG) can cause bloating, water retention, and high blood pressure.

Some people have a bad reaction to it. I never have had a problem myself.

My uncle claimed that he had a bad reaction to MSG. I asked him what happens. He told me it f'd him up. I asked him to be specific what specifically would happen, but he insisted it f'd him up. And I wasn't able to get anything out of him other then it f'd him up. I am not sure if he was embarrassed about what it did, and he didn't want to get into details, or if he really thought that his vague response was a meaningful answer. But I stopped asking him and never bothered asking him again.
