Wahl clippers: does it really matter if I use Wahl clippers purchased for human use on my dog?

I am trying to save myself some grooming costs. Does it really matter what kind of clippers I use to trim my dog?

That is funny! I can tell you love your boys though.

Thanks Robert. As long as I clean it, I can't imagine any problem.

Dogs nails are not shaped like human ones so you do need one made just for dogs. You could injure your dog by trying to use human clippers.

I think they will work, though I'm not sure they will work long term. Dogs have more hair so that the motor would have to be able to handle the extended use.

when I cut my son's hair, it gets a little heated, but I just be sure to oil the blades so that it doesn't lock up or anything. Gonna give the puppy a try any day now...

Yes it does! Do you know if the breed you have has 2 layers of hair (undercoat)? You could really hurt your pooch!

I have a 1/2 miniature poodle 1/2 golden retreiver dog, I believe he does have a pretty thick undercoat. I was only intending to trim him with the longest guard at this time, but will look into a pair specifically for dogs for summer when I plan to cut him short.

You can trim him by placing long hair on your hand, hold clippers without guard perpendicular to your hand & place straight down through his hair to your hand. Improperly cutting your dog's hair with the wrong tools can snag his undercoat and really cause in a lot of pain. Animal clippers are designed to be able to go through the undercut have different size teeth to cut the hair.

They'll work until they burn up. Keep them oiled and pick up a can of kool lube to spray them whenever they start getting hot
