How do I become a respectable adult?

It seems dumb, but I'm 18 years old, 19 in April, and I have a lot of frustrations about being taken seriously at my age. I'm not exactly a bad kid, I just want to make sure that I'm taken seriously in life and not affected by my age still. I try hard, but not always succeed. I'm polite, but do not accept when people treat me badly for invalid reasons. Is there something else I should learn?

You earn your reputation one day and one act at a time. It's just like building a castle, brick by brick. You treat people as you want to be and soon all the good (or bad) returns to you. It's hard to be patient but that's all part of maturing. I'm old, I learned the hard way.

You should learn how to avoid worrying what others think of you. Everyone wants respect but don't become a kiss ass just to get it. If you believe you are a respectable adult, then enough is said.

People will always treat you poorly. That is how most people are. People don't really know how old you are unless you tell them. They just assume your age. If you act and dress older than you are, people will generally assume that you are a few year older.
people are very judgmental and judge mainly by appearances. If you seem young they will treat you that way.

Guess that means I'm on the right track then! Thanks :) I feel more wise than my contemporaries so that helps.

Do your best in whatever you do. No one can do more than their best. If you know you have done your best, ignore the opinions of those who slight you.

Shakespeare said: This above all, to your own self be true. It follows then, as night follows day, you can't be false to anyone.

Works for me.

You'll have plenty of time to be taken seriously. At your age I'd worry about enjoying my youth. You'll get respect when you've earned it.

It'd be awesome if I could enjoy it while not being condescended, though. I've found that older adults can really ruin happiness if they disagree with you, and no amount of ignoring helps :(

If you want to be a respectable adult you need to do something most people find to be a challenge. You need to be determined and persistent. The strange thing is that not many will notice what your doing and you will have only yourself pushing you forward. Once you have reached a seemingly difficult point folks will notice and respect you for what you have done, so don't be expecting a cheerleading section, your in this alone.

People are rude by nature. Learn to not expect respect. Move on to something positive
