Can a 6 week old hamster have babies?

Because I believe my 6 week old violet is pregnant

Report as

They can get pregnant by age 5 weeks.
When did you get her? Hamster gestation is 15 to 21 days.
Does she live with another hamster? Make sure that its another girl, and not a boy. Also, they will need separated if she IS pregnant, and should be separated regardless if they are Syrian hamsters.

Just follow the advice in the following links. If you want, you can even join the forum and ask advice.

I noticed your user name... I hope you are not intentionally trying to breed Violet. At her age she is still not fully developed enough to carry a litter, and will probably have problems, or cull the entire litter. Also, if you don't know her or the father's genetics, then the litter could be born without eyes or teeth. That's a death sentence for every pup. Finally, we already have more hamsters than there are homes, so home breeding hamsters is very irresponsible.

Thanks um I actually had a hamster who had a litter she was a year old. Violet was one of them. I accidentally left the boys with the girls to long. Her symptoms are: fat lumpy belly, nipples. Protruding from her belly, making a nest out of tissue paper, storing food underneath. And no I am not intentionally breeding her or any of my hammies. My family just calls me that because of Paisley the one who had violet. Thanks again!

OK just make sure you check out the links I put up there. It's a very helpful site.

One thing I would definitely recommend is to make sure she is in a tank or bin all by herself (google "bin cage.") I wouldn't recommend the tube cages because babies can fall down tubes, and you don't know where she's going to keep them. Make sure there is plenty of bedding and toilet paper in there for her.
She should be on a high protein diet, again that info is on the site I gave you. Keep her on this diet from now until the pups are weaned - 4 weeks or so after birth.
Do not touch babies before they open their eyes! You may feel its OK if you did before, but it's a good precaution because if you start messing with momma or make a baby smell different, she might stress out and kill the pup. Just leave them alone - don't even change the bedding for two weeks. Just give momma food and refresh the water.
Make sure to take out all of the toys AND the wheel from the cage. That way crawling babies don't get hurt.

Thanks again and from my first experience with Paisley I always put them In a 10 gallo top fin tank I call it the "birthing/Grow-up tank"

OK that's good because it's waaaaay safer than wire cages. Personally I recommend a 20 gallon long, or larger, because the extra space is more comfortable.

How much do you think a 20 gallon would be At pet smart?

Looks like that one is $30. You can usually find them cheaper used, it's just a matter of finding them at all lol. Just make sure you get the one that is 12 inches by 30 inches, because there are a couple different versions of 20 gallon aquariums and that one has the biggest floor space.

Ok and I think it was just a chemical pregnancy or one of those where the mother absorbs her babies :( because She is still fat and making a nest and her nipples are still prodruding what should I do??

I would take her to the vet. Hamsters have a lot of other illnesses, and it could be a lot of different things. She may be retaining fluid for one reason or another. What's her behavior like? Does she let you hold her?

A hamster can get pregnant between 4 and 8 weeks of age. A few are fertile at 4 weeks, more at 6, all by 8 weeks at the latest. This means that your hamster is pregnant if you spot some funny behavior.

Yes she seems pregnant and you shouldn't touch her at all until 1 week after the pinkies are born also remove all hamster from her cage because they can harm her or the pinkies also you shouldn't let them be with opposite gender in general and when the pinkies are 1 or 1 1/2 months old you have to sell them or the mother becomes stressed also they breed fat and it can be VERY unsanitary
