You've had the official reason. Old age and ill health. That's not normal for a Pontiff who usually struggles on, even through doddering senility.

Much more likely is Benedict's former role in covering up paedophilia in Germany. He is now an embarrassment to the Church and the decision to step down may not have have been his choice.

When politicians of any persuasion are forced to step down the excuse normally given is either poor health or family commitments.
