IRS sends you a letter in the mail stating you haven't filed federal tax returns. They calculate the penalties and interest owed. If you fail to pay them they garnish wages, take the funds in the bank, take you're house or spend time in prison for tax evasion. Lesson here? If we owe, pay

If you don't file taxes when you're supposed to, you'll pay heavy fines because the IRS will penalize you. The IRS does a substitute return and notify you of the amount of taxes you ought to pay.
