What is your opinion of Marco Rubio's Republican response to the President's State of the Union Address?

"More government isn't going to help you get ahead. It's going to hold you back."
That line was the summation of his major theme. Pure Reagan. Too bad he isn't more comfy in front of the camera, because he could do a good job if he had Reagan's happy warrior spirit. But he is young enough to get the experience.

If Rubio were a Democrat, his speech would be hailed as pure genius. Dems hate him because he's Hispanic, he is articulate, and he's inspirational.
Report as
That's a big stretch.
Report as
Hate him because he is Hispanic ? Yo gotta be kidding? Who got the Hispanic vote? What a ludicrous statement !
Report as
They hate him bc he's a rep. Hispanic. Don't you get it?
Report as
I pay no attention to personal insults. They are a sign of a failure to advance your line of argument and don't deserve to be in the thread.
Report as
I do dislike a few of the more absurd tea partyish things Rubio has said but he's not all that high on the radar of Democrats that I know of. Although he's said the occasional Palinesque absurdity, he doesn't draw the shrill fire that Palin did or that Al Gore does with the right. The Gore phenomenon I find mystifying since he was mostly a mild-center right southern Dem until he became famous for environmentalism, and then the hysterics began. Teddy Roosevelt was one too. You'd think that concern for the earth wouldn't be that controversial but on the other hand Koch-types put a lot of money behind creating controversy there.
Report as
Theres a lot of money on both sides; Soros is a wealthy advocate and tends to make money by creating turmoil and using the resultant volatility to arbitrage currency. I do believe he's a wealthy 1%er with a thin socialist veneer. The Koch brothers are similar in that they have an ideology they fund. It's legal, it's allowable, and they are open about what they believe. You can't ask for more from advocates.
Report as
Soros is absolutely a 1%-er which makes the notion that he's socialist pretty bizarre. His (often devious) manipulation of markets is pure capitalist.
Report as
Agree. Lately we are agreeing and I am wondering who moved ;)

If Rubio listened and grasped Obama's speech he would have heard Obama say " we need a smarter government not a bigger one". Very unimpressed with Rubio. The Republican party is going nowhere with him. He appeared nervous, wiping his face constantly and reaching for water like an amateur. A child could have responded better. The stock market is up 7000 pts. It is the highest that it has been since the Bush disaster. The housing market is rebounding. The Republicans are clueless. Why can't they admit it. Rubio is not in the same league as Obama. It's like comparing a Pro to an amateur.

One gets thirsty when they are burning their bridges....
Report as
Nobody liked his reach for the water. Agree there. If Obama wants smaller government, why do we spend 8 pct more every year?
Report as
Because everybody does! Cost of growth? He sounded like an amateur.
Report as
Cost of growth?? WHAT GROWTH!!

Obama contradicted himself with the "smaller or smarter government". He spoke about more government agencies, which equals bigger government. He can tell you all he wants and people will believe him. Truth is he loves big government and he thinks government is the solution to problems.

<shrug> It's just a speech. It means little. Same for Obama's. Pretty words, many of which either of them might have said. The SOTU is a vestigial tradition. I'm not sure what purpose it served in the 18th century but in today's age of mass media it's just show biz.

Rubio made more sense in his few minutes and decimated Obama's speech.

What did you think of the Rubio speech?
Report as
he tried , and he is upcoming in the GOP future, but he flubbed up bad with the water routine....it was a SNL sketch ...lol
Report as
I'm an independent, I keep a close eye on politics and current events, he impresses me. But yes, the cotton mouth kind of ruined it Haha
Report as
You do realize that we voted opposite in the last election right? lol
Report as
How do you know? Not that it would matter..
Report as
I'll bet you anything you'd like to bet that we didn't vote opposite, and I don't even know who you voted for
Report as
yes you do.... I remember you vaguely on some of the political comments.... we were all kinda snippy at times...lol
Report as
not to each other I don't think...lol
Report as
I voted for Obama the first time he ran, I was completely sold on him. This time, to my shame, I didn't vote for either. I'm a patriotic guy, I've voted in every election since I was 18, I've fought for this country, but I couldn't vote for either, in good conscience this time. I feel shame for not voting because I love the democratic process and I love this country, but for the first time, I didn't vote this time. I apologize if I appeared arrogant with anyone on any of the threads or answers, I try to refrain from that, I'm not that kind of guy. We all have opinions and we should respect everyones right to have their opinion, that's what makes this country free and great.
Report as
Sometimes maybe I'm a little to passionate about my opinions, I'm sorry if you've ever seen that.
Report as
I'll respect your opinions and go toe to toe with anyone on this site if they give you a hard time for the opinion that you subscribe to, even if it's in contradiction to mine ;)
Report as
Wow that was deep...it's ok tho... I voted for Obama...and I voted for Bush because I didn't like Kerry...what a mess...
Report as
I'm conservative in quite a few ways but I have empathy for the poor who need the social programs to keep their heads above water...I just can't see them get written off...
Report as
Well, you voted, I didn't and I still feel guilty for not exercising the freedom that so many gave their all for, I'm ashamed of myself, in hindsight, I should have picked one. I didn't vote for Bush, but as a man, not as a president, but as a man, he's one of the best. I don't vote along party lines, I try to research the issues and how they voted on them and what their views are on them.
Report as
Me too, I walk the fence until I decide...
Report as
I'm guessing that you and I have very similar political views, I feel the exact same as you. I have a lot of conservative views. I like the quote on merrilltom's profile, it's a Ronald Reagan quote. I don't agree with 100% of anyone and I'm not going to vote for anyone just because of their party affiliation.
Report as
Yes I think so...it's ok to have different opinions ...
Report as
There have to be extreme arguments on both sides of the spectrum, it's what brings things to the center, it's what makes us great as a nation..In time of war, we need to all come together though, when we have men and women fighting and dying, that's not the time to debate it, that's just my opinion based on my life's experiences. I've been in foreign countries as a young man, fighting and watching my friends die as people back home are questioning whether or not there's even a need for us to be there...again, that's just my opinion, I'll respect anyone who disagrees with me, I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't.
Report as
Life would be boring if we were all exactly alike ;)

so true...Thank You for serving our Country...

No mam, If I were interrogating you, you wouldn't know it ;)
Report as
You were the popular girl in school, yet you didn't walk in vanity dismissing those who weren't?
Report as
Lol...
Report as
It's interesting that you mentioned interrogation, I spent a couple of months in quantico perfecting the art of interrogation, the training was fascinating. If you know how to do it, you may not be able to get them to confess, but you can tell when they're not being truthful. The human mind wasn't programmed to remember lies.
Report as
I don't remember being that popular...of course being on the squad would make one stand out more I suppose... Well, I really liked Drama in High School, I was in all the school musicals( not the star)... Maybe that's my problem, I don't get to act out anymore... Lol
