How bad does your hearing have to be for the audiologist to prescribe hearing aids?

Okay, so I have a minor hearing loss and i have since I was born, but it has never effected me this much. I failed both my school hearing tests (it was so bad they thought the machine was broken!) and I have an appointment to the audiologist on Thursday. The hearing issue seems to be getting much worse and apparent. How bad does your hearing have to be to be given hearing aids?

For an audiology to prescribe the hearing aid, the hearing is extremely complex. Before they prescribe it for you, you have to pass through some tests that will be done in a professional way to accommodate your needs. Not all hearing loss problems require hearing aid as the audiologists can work out with other methods to help you. You need to go for an examination before getting them.

The school probably did just a general test. The audiologist will go much more in depth. They will determine which frequencies are affected. Some frequencies are more important than others. If the frequencies of human speech are affected, then you will probably need assistance. If its ringing in the ears, or the sound of running water that is drowning out certain frequencies; then medication might be in order. At this point, it's a "wait and see" situation.
